Education:

Graduate of an accredited Diagnostic Medical Sonography program. Must be credentialed by the American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS) with specialty certification in Obstetrics and Gynecology (OB/GYN) or registry eligible with certification obtained within the timeframe established by the organization. Current BLS certification required. 2.

Training and Experience:

Minimum one year s experience in Obstetrical and Gynecological Sonography preferred. Experience performing routine and high-risk obstetrical examinations, fetal anatomy surveys, biophysical profiles, first-trimester studies, and gynecologic ultrasound procedures preferred. 3.

Job Knowledge:

Knowledge of fetal development, maternal anatomy and physiology, gynecological pathology, and obstetrical ultrasound protocols. Ability to recognize normal and abnormal fetal and maternal structures and communicate findings appropriately to interpreting physicians. Must display a good understanding of age-related developmental issues of adolescent and adult patients; ability to follow oral and written instructions; communicate effectively with patients, visitors, physicians, and associates within the organization. 4.

DESCRIPTION

Responsible for the operation of diagnostic ultrasound equipment for the performance of obstetrical and gynecological ultrasound procedures at a technical level not requiring direct supervision. Performs examinations in accordance with established protocols to assist physicians in the diagnosis and management of maternal and fetal conditions.

Physical Effort:

Moderate amount of lifting and positioning of patients and equipment. Position requires ability to frequently lift objects heavier than 50 lbs., perform difficult manipulative skills and hand-eye coordination skills, walk and stand for prolonged periods, see objects closely and hear normal sounds with some background noise. Majority of time spent in the ultrasound department with occasional portable examinations. Associate may frequently be exposed to blood and body fluids.

Mental Effort:

Position requires ability to concentrate on fine detail with constant interruption and attend to tasks for 45 to 60 minutes at a time. Must be able to perform accurate fetal measurements, evaluate fetal anatomy, assess maternal structures, recognize abnormalities requiring physician review, communicate effectively, and maintain patient confidentiality.
