The successful candidate will provide high-quality surgical care while supporting our mission to reduce pet overpopulation and improve animal welfare through accessible sterilization services. This position is ideal for a veterinarian who enjoys surgery, teamwork, and making a meaningful impact in the community. Key Responsibilities Perform high-quality, high-volume spay and neuter surgeries Conduct pre-operative physical examinations to assess surgical candidates. Administer and monitor anesthesia in collaboration with veterinary technicians. Diagnose and address minor medical conditions identified during examinations when appropriate. Provide pain management and ensure patient comfort throughout the surgical process. Monitor post-operative recovery and manage any surgical complications. Assist with accurate and complete medical records. Follow established protocols for infection control, patient safety, and controlled substances. Collaborate with veterinary technicians, assistants, and support staff to ensure efficient daily operations. Participate in quality improvement initiatives and maintain a clean, organized surgical environment. Qualifications Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM or equivalent) from an accredited institution. Active veterinary license in good standing (or eligibility for licensure in the state of Iowa). DEA license (or ability to obtain) as required. Experience performing spay and neuter surgeries preferred; high-volume surgical experience is a plus. Strong knowledge of anesthesia, analgesia, and perioperative patient care. Excellent surgical skills with attention to detail and patient safety. Strong communication and interpersonal skills. Ability to work efficiently in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment. Preferred Qualifications Experience in shelter medicine or community veterinary medicine but not required Fear Free or Low Stress Handling certification Experience and interest mentoring veterinary students or support staff Physical Requirements Ability to stand for extended periods while performing surgery. Manual dexterity sufficient for precise surgical procedures. Ability to work in a clinical environment with exposure to animals, cleaning chemicals, and anesthetic gases.
