A Veterinarian provides medical care to animals. Diagnoses and treats illnesses and injuries. Specializes in treating either pets and small domesticated animals, or large animals and livestock, or wild animals. May work on farms, in zoos and wildlife sanctuaries, in animal shelters, or in hospitals or clinics that specialize in caring for animals. May inspect livestock used for food and check compliance with food safety regulations, or work in laboratories doing clinical research on animal and human diseases.

Assistant State Wildlife Veterinarian The incumbent must be a veterinarian licensed by and in good standing with the Louisiana Board of Veterinary Medicine or have the ability to be licensed within 60 days following acceptance of this position as a term of employment. The incumbent must also be registered with the Louisiana Board of Pharmacy and the United States Drug Enforcement Agency to handle Schedule 2/2N, 3/3N, 4 and 5 controlled and dangerous drugs, or the ability to be registered within 60 days following acceptance of this position as a term of employment. Additionally, the incumbent should be credentialed as a Category II Accredited Veterinarian under the USDA National Veterinary Accreditation Program. This is an Exempt Position under the Federal Wage and Hour Laws. T his position represents a major subset of the Wildlife Health and Disease Program, and as such receives programmatic supervision from the State Wildlife Veterinarian. This is a statewide position that will be domiciled in one of the following LDWF field offices: Hammond, Lafayette, Lake Charles, Minden, Monroe or Pineville. The position may also be domiciled at LDWF Headquarters in Baton Rouge. Domicile will be determined upon selection of the candidate.
Ideal Candidate:
Knowledge of wildlife diseases and standard wildlife biological principles and diagnostic procedures Working knowledge of, and ability to perform, a comprehensive gross necropsy under laboratory and field conditions. Experience with browse surveys and other habitat data collection techniques Knowledge and experience with chemical immobilization and remote anesthesia of wildlife Ability to communicate professionally, orally and in writing Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively in a team setting Experience with the chemical immobilization of wildlife Available for regular field travel, overnight stays, and participation in regional Southeastern working groups Ability to lift objects weighing over 50 pounds Experience with operating off-road vehicles Working knowledge of Microsoft Office products Possession of a current Louisiana license to practice veterinary medicine. Job Duties:
The incumbent is responsible for the following (note: excavators may be land-based or amphibious): Assist the State Wildlife Veterinarian in wildlife disease investigation programs including but not limited to Epizootic Hemorrhagic Disease, Chronic Wasting Disease, Avian Influenza, Swine Brucellosis and Pseudorabies as well as any other diseases which emerge Assist with administration of the LDWF Controlled and Dangerous Drug Program, which includes staff training in the safe use of chemical immobilization drugs Biohazard training and disease education for biological staff as well as providing technical assistance to other LDWF Divisions upon request with supervisor approval. Maintain an extremely high level of competency and marksmanship with LDWF approved rifles and darting equipment for herd health, disease, or nuisance deer work.
