Job Description

Job Overview We are seeking a highly skilled, safety‑focused Heavy Equipment Operator to join our team. This position involves operating a wide range of heavy machinery used in road maintenance, construction support, and seasonal operations. The ideal candidate brings strong mechanical aptitude, dependable work habits, and the ability to perform in diverse outdoor environments, including extreme weather conditions. This role plays a critical part in maintaining safe, functional roadways and supporting infrastructure projects across the region. Primary Duties and Responsibilities Operate heavy equipment —including quad‑axle and tandem‑axle trucks, graders, loaders, tractors, and excavators—with precision, efficiency, and strict adherence to safety standards. Conduct thorough pre‑trip and post‑trip inspections of all assigned equipment, identifying mechanical issues, fluid levels, tire conditions, and operational readiness. Perform snow and ice control operations , including plowing, sanding, salting, and clearing roadways during winter weather events. Carry out tree cutting, brushing, and vegetation management along roadways and rights‑of‑way to maintain visibility and safety. Execute surface and shoulder maintenance , including patching, grading, compacting, and flagging operations during active work zones. Install, repair, and maintain culverts , drainage structures, and related components to ensure proper water flow and prevent roadway erosion. Complete roadside cleanup , debris removal, and general site maintenance as assigned. Identify and report road hazards , damaged or missing traffic signs, and equipment repair needs promptly to supervisors. Follow all safety guidelines, PPE requirements, and operational protocols to maintain a safe work environment for yourself, coworkers, and the public. Collaborate with crew members to complete projects efficiently, meeting quality standards and project specifications. Maintain accurate daily logs , including labor hours, equipment usage, materials consumed, and inventory needs. Required Skills and Qualifications Proficiency in operating heavy equipment , including but not limited to dump trucks, graders, loaders, tractors, and excavators. Strong mechanical aptitude , with the ability to troubleshoot minor issues and perform basic equipment maintenance. Valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL) required. Ability to lift, push, or pull up to 80 pounds and perform physically demanding tasks for extended periods. Capability to work independently or as part of a team , often in challenging weather conditions such as heat, cold, rain, or snow. Effective communication skills for coordinating tasks with team members, supervisors, and the public when necessary. Successful applicants must possess a valid medical card/physical and pass a pre‑employment drug screening .
