Job Description

Overview The Safety Director is responsible for leading and managing all aspects of Roane Transportation's safety program, ensuring full compliance with DOT and FMCSA regulations while fostering a culture of accountability, professionalism, and elite driver performance. This role plays a critical part in protecting drivers, the public, and company assets by proactively reducing risk, improving driver safety performance, and maintaining operational compliance. Duties Safety Program Leadership Develop, implement, and continuously improve company-wide safety policies and procedures Lead initiatives that promote a strong "safety-first" culture across all operations Drive safety performance aligned with company goals (e.g., accident reduction, CSA improvement) Regulatory Compliance Ensure compliance with all DOT, FMCSA, and state regulations Oversee Hours of Service (HOS), ELD compliance, and driver qualification files Maintain audit readiness and lead responses to DOT audits, inspections, and investigations Handles all DOT random drug screens Driver Safety Management Monitor driver safety performance, including accidents, violations, and inspections Implement corrective action plans, coaching, and disciplinary procedures when necessary Lead safety meetings, training sessions, and driver education programs Oversee onboarding safety processes and collaborate with recruiting and orientation teams Incident & Claims Management Submits DATA Q's vis the FMCSA website to reduce CSA score Investigate accidents, incidents, and near-misses Manage root cause analysis and implement preventive measures Coordinate with insurance providers and legal partners on claims and litigation Training & Development Design and deliver ongoing safety training programs Partner with operations and recruiting to ensure new hires meet safety standards Support mentoring and driver development initiatives to improve retention and safety performance Risk Management & Reporting Analyze safety data, trends, and KPIs to identify risk areas Prepare and present regular safety reports to executive leadership Develop strategies to reduce insurance exposure and improve company safety scores Cross-Functional Collaboration Work closely with Operations, Recruiting, Maintenance, and Leadership teams Ensure alignment between safety goals and business growth initiatives Support branding and reputation as a safe, elite carrier Preferred CDL (Class A) or prior driving experience Experience in flatbed operations Bachelor's degree in Safety, Transportation, Business, or related field Key Skills Leadership and team development Regulatory expertise and audit readiness Data analysis and problem-solving Strong communication and coaching ability Crisis management and decision-making Success Metrics Reduction in preventable accidents Improved CSA scores and inspection results Driver retention tied to safety culture Audit outcomes and compliance performance Required Qualifications Verifiable safety management experience in trucking, transportation, or logistics Strong knowledge of FMCSA and DOT regulations Experience with ELD systems, HOS compliance, and CSA scoring Proven track record of reducing accidents and improving safety metrics Verifiable safety management experience in trucking, transportation, or logistics Strong knowledge of FMCSA and DOT regulations Experience with ELD systems, HOS compliance, and CSA scoring Proven track record of reducing accidents and improving safety metrics Why This Role Matters at Roane At Roane Transportation, safety is not just compliance—it's part of the company identity.
