Job Description

The Mansard House is a 12-room boutique hotel in Galveston with a small coffee shop and gift shop that are open to both hotel guests and the public. We are looking for a friendly, outgoing person to operate our coffee shop while also serving as an on-site host for our hotel guests. This is not a high-volume coffee shop position. Our atmosphere is intentionally relaxed and personal. Some days may be busy, while during the slower season we may have only a handful of hotel guests—or even just one occupied room. We want someone who is comfortable with that pace but understands that a quiet shift doesn't mean there is nothing to do. A big part of this position is helping us grow the coffee shop and gift shop into destinations of their own , bringing more people into The Mansard House while providing excellent service to the guests already staying with us. What You'll Do Open and operate the coffee shop during breakfast and lunch hours Prepare specialty coffees, espresso drinks, and other beverages for hotel guests and the public Provide warm, personal service without the rushed atmosphere of a high-volume coffee shop Greet hotel guests and be an approachable on-site point of contact during your shift Talk with guests about Galveston and offer thoughtful recommendations for restaurants, shopping, attractions, beaches, and things to do Get to know our hotel guests and look for small opportunities to make their stay better Open and operate the gift shop for hotel guests and outside visitors Handle coffee shop and retail sales and maintain an organized register Keep the coffee shop, gift shop, lobby, and other immediate guest areas clean, stocked, and inviting Answer basic hotel questions and assist guests when possible Communicate housekeeping, maintenance, reservation, or other concerns to the appropriate person Help promote the coffee shop and gift shop through excellent service and a welcoming atmosphere Restock merchandise, coffee supplies, beverages, and guest items as necessary Assist with other light hotel duties during slower periods The Person We're Looking For Personality matters tremendously in this position. We're looking for someone who is friendly, conversational, dependable, and comfortable meeting new people . You should enjoy talking with visitors and sharing what you know about Galveston rather than simply waiting behind the counter for someone to place an order. At the same time, you need to be comfortable working independently. There will be slower periods, particularly during the off-season, when you will need to recognize what can be cleaned, restocked, organized, improved, or prepared without someone constantly directing you. Barista experience required. Restaurant, hotel, retail, or hospitality experience is helpful, but we are willing to train the right person. A Little Different From a Typical Coffee Shop The Mansard House is a small boutique hotel, so this isn't a traditional Starbucks-style barista position. You might make a cappuccino for someone who walked in from the neighborhood, help a hotel guest decide where to have dinner that evening, sell something from the gift shop, make another round of coffees, and then spend some quiet time restocking and getting things ready for the next day. That's exactly what we want the position to be. The goal is to create a welcoming place where hotel guests and locals alike want to spend a little time—and where our hotel guests know there is a friendly, knowledgeable person available if they need something.
