Sommelier |
La Nouvelle Maison Estimated Compensation:
$75,000-$90,000+ per year
Job Type:
Full-Time | In Person La Nouvelle Maison is seeking an experienced, passionate, and hospitality-driven Sommelier to join our team. This position combines guest-focused wine service with the day-to-day responsibilities of helping manage a successful fine-dining wine and beverage program. The ideal candidate has strong wine knowledge, excellent guest engagement and sales skills, and experience with purchasing, inventory, vendor relationships, and staff education.
Responsibilities Guest Experience & Wine Sales:
Provide knowledgeable, polished, and approachable wine service. Engage with guests, make thoughtful recommendations, and provide food and wine pairings based on their preferences, menu selections, and budget.
Wine & Beverage Expertise:
Maintain a thorough knowledge of the wine and beverage programs, including producers, regions, vintages, styles, spirits, beer, and food and wine pairing.
Wine Service:
Execute refined wine presentations and proper service techniques, including opening, decanting, glassware selection, temperature management, and the service of fine and mature wines.
Purchasing & Vendor Relations:
Participate in wine and beverage purchasing, meet with distributors and suppliers, evaluate products, negotiate pricing, place orders, and maintain strong vendor relationships.
Inventory Management:
Manage receiving, restocking, cellar organization, inventory levels, and monthly physical inventory while helping maintain appropriate stock levels and beverage costs.
Menu Management:
Assist with maintaining, updating, and printing wine lists, cocktail menus, beverage menus, and training materials.
Staff Education:
Educate and mentor the service team through pre-shift and ongoing training in wine, spirits, beer, food pairing, and proper beverage service.
Dining Room Support:
Participate in daily pre-shift meetings and work closely with the management and service teams. Assist servers when needed and provide host, maître d', and management coverage when required.
Glassware & Cellar Standards:
Help ensure wine glassware, beverage equipment, storage areas, and cellars are properly maintained and organized.
Professional Standards:
Lead by example in professionalism, grooming, organization, hospitality, and attention to detail while consistently upholding La Nouvelle Maison's standards of service. Qualifications Certified Sommelier (CMS) or equivalent certification preferred; comparable professional experience considered 3+ years of sommelier or significant wine-focused fine-dining experience preferred Strong knowledge of major wine regions, producers, vintages, wine service, and food and wine pairing Strong knowledge of French wines, particularly Burgundy, Bordeaux, Champagne, and Rhône Experience with wine purchasing, distributor relationships, pricing, and vendor negotiations Experience with ordering, receiving, inventory management, and beverage cost control Exceptional guest engagement and communication skills, with the ability to make wine approachable to guests with varying levels of wine knowledge Strong sales skills while maintaining a hospitality-first approach Experience handling and serving fine, mature, and high-value wines Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail Ability to remain composed and professional in a fast-paced fine-dining environment Working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, MICROS POS systems, and beverage inventory systems Ability to stand and walk for extended periods, climb ladders, and lift or carry wine cases and other beverage inventory Schedule Being in South Florida, La Nouvelle Maison operates year-round, with staffing needs that vary based on business volume throughout the year. Our peak season requires additional availability to meet the needs of the restaurant and our guests. Approximately 6 days per week during peak season (November through Mother's Day) Approximately 5 days per week during the remainder of the year Primarily evening shifts, with closing responsibilities approximately 1-2 nights per week Earlier arrival required on certain days for inventory, deliveries, vendor meetings, staff training, menu updates, and other beverage program responsibilities Weekend and holiday availability required Professional attire: suit and tie Compensation Estimated total annual compensation is $75,000-$90,000+ , consisting of: Base salary Participation in the server/bartender tip pool Wine sales commission Actual compensation will vary based on wine sales, restaurant volume, and other variable compensation.
