About Us Chemist Spirits is a women-owned distillery in Asheville's South Slope neighborhood, and the company behind Antidote Cocktail Lounge and Coffee Bar. As a locally operated hospitality business, we care about collaboration, quality craft, continual growth, and genuine hospitality toward our guests and our team. Chemist of Biltmore Village is our second location, home to Penny Black, our speakeasy, alongside the Chemist Mercantile and Tasting Room. The Role We're looking for Bartenders to help open Penny Black and hold the bar once we're open. Penny Black is built around hospitality. We offer table service in an elegant, comfortable room that is both approachable and refined. The concept is inspired by the speakeasies of the prohibition era, grounded in Asheville's own Appalachian heritage, and supported by the Chemist Spirits values and mission and our award-winning craft spirits. Training begins the week of October 20, ahead of our soft opening in late October or early November. Before we open, you'll train on the opening menu and help set up the bar: station setup, prep systems, and the standards the program will operate with. After we open, you'll be behind the bar setting the standard for craft, service, and hospitality, and training and coaching the team alongside you. Bartenders will work a host, server, or barback shift on a regular rotation in addition to their bar shifts. This keeps the whole team fluent in every position, and it keeps the work shared fairly. This role suits someone who wants to help build a new experience, and be part of a core team of professionals. This is a 4-5-day-per-week schedule. Evenings and weekends are required. What You'll Do Bartend the full cocktail menu with accuracy and consistency, using house-made ingredients and the spirits we distill Host guests and educate them on Chemist Spirits products, our cocktail menu, and our beer and wine offerings Help set up the bar before opening: prep systems, par levels, station setup, and menu execution will be a team effort Support coworkers and their learning curves with specs, techniques, and service standards Support the team during service: fill in where needed, communicate clearly, and keep service running smoothly Work host, server, and barback shifts on a regular rotation in addition to bar shifts Maintain prep, cleanliness, and organization, and set up the following shift for success Help establish and uphold standards of hospitality, service, and craft as the program grows Communicate with management about what is working on the floor and what needs to change Uphold NC ABC standards and responsible alcohol service What We're Looking For 2+ years bartending, preferably in a craft cocktail program Strong working knowledge of classic cocktail specs, bar technique, and spirits Experience training, coaching, or mentoring other team members Proactive and independent. You see what needs doing and handle it, and you think creatively to problem-solve Strong communication skills and a collaborative approach to teamwork A commitment to internal hospitality, within the team, as well as hospitality toward guests Organized and effective during high-volume service Willingness to work any position in the house and to lead by example Genuine interest in spirits, cocktails, and other craft beverages Availability evenings and weekends Familiarity with POS systems (such as Toast) is helpful 21+ and eligible to serve alcohol in North Carolina (required by NC law) Why Work With Us?
