Server / Bartender
Job Description
Makina is an Eritrean-Ethiopian restaurant on Skillman Avenue in Sunnyside. We started in 2017 as a food truck — the first run by an Eritrean-American woman in New York City — and grew into a full-service dining room with a full bar, a café on Governors Island, and a catering operation that feeds rooms at The New York Times, Google, and NYU. We're hiring a Server / Bartender who is equally at home on the floor and behind the bar. Some nights you'll run a section. Some nights you'll run the bar. Most nights you'll do a bit of both, depending on how the room fills. We need someone who can switch between the two without missing a beat. For a lot of our guests, it's their first Eritrean or Ethiopian meal. You'll be the one who explains how injera works, what to order for the table, and which drink goes with berbere. We'll teach you the food and the culture. You bring the hospitality. What you'll do Run a section: greet, guide guests through a menu that's new to many of them, take orders, and pace the meal Run the bar: make cocktails, pour beer and wine (including tej, Ethiopian honey wine), and look after bar guests and the service well Move between floor and bar as the night demands, and step in wherever the room needs you Check IDs and serve alcohol responsibly, every time Handle allergy and dietary requests carefully. Many guests are gluten-free, vegan, or spice-sensitive, and injera contains gluten. The plate has to match the ticket.
