DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
This is the entry level class in the Food Service Assistant series. This class is distinguished from the Senior Food Service Assistant classification by the performance of the more routine tasks and duties assigned to positions within the series including short order grill cooking. Responsibilities and Duties
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Serve quality food and snacks to students and staff; set up, take down and clean assigned food bars, steam tables and salad bars. Perform short order grill cooking including but not limited to hash browns, sausages, bacon, and French toast. Cut meat and cheeses for sandwiches and pizzas; prepare pizza crusts; pre-make sandwiches. Operate various appliances and equipment found in all areas of food service including, but not limited to, grills, fryers, steamers, ovens, food processors and slicers. Clean, maintain and sanitize food service areas, utensils and equipment according to established procedures and regulations; sweep and mop the kitchen and assigned areas. Operate cash register and serve as cashier for assigned food service area. May provide training to student workers. Perform related duties and responsibilities as assigned.
Qualifications Knowledge of:
Basic principles, concepts, and practices of nutrition. Principles and practices of safe food handling and grill cooking. Methods and techniques of kitchen equipment operation, cleaning and maintenance.
Ability to:
Perform short order grill cooking. Operate a cash register in an efficient manner; and handle and count money in an accurate, complete, and timely manner. Clean and maintain food service areas, utensils and equipment. Operate, clean and maintain various kitchen equipment and tools. Follow verbal and written instructions and directions. Communicate effectively orally and in writing. Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with all employees and others encountered in the course of work. Demonstrate sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, linguistic, and ethnic backgrounds and disabilities of community college students and staff as demonstrated by skills and abilities in cultural responsiveness and cultural humility.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Any combination of education and experience that would provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required knowledge and abilities would be:

Physical Demands:
Frequent lifting and carrying up to 50 pounds; constant standing and walking; operation of kitchen equipment and appliances.
Work Environment:
Work takes place mostly within an indoor environment, including a kitchen, cafeteria, and the Child Development Center; work may take place outdoors on an occasional basis.
Hazards:
The nature of work involves working in a food service or kitchen environment, which may consist of exposure to cleaning agents and chemicals, hot surfaces, sharp edges, and cold freezers. Work may involve interactions with children of varying ages who may exhibit unruly behavior.
