Part Time (Monday, Wednesday, Friday and ½ day on Saturday) Job Summary The Chef Assistant supports the mission of The Shoulder by helping ensure that all food service operations run smoothly, safely, and in alignment with organizational standards. Under the direction of the Chef, the Chef Assistant assists with preparing, cooking, and serving nutritious meals for clients based on the established menu. This position helps maintain kitchen cleanliness, food quality, and inventory organization to support a consistent, healthy dining experience for clients. The Chef Assistant contributes to daily kitchen operations by assisting with food preparation, portioning, storage, and labeling, and by monitoring the freshness and condition of ingredients. The role supports the Chef in maintaining compliance with food safety regulations and organizational policies, including proper sanitation practices and safe equipment use. The Chef Assistant may help with receiving deliveries, stocking supplies, rotating inventory, and communicating any shortages or concerns to the Chef. This position also assists in maintaining the overall appearance and cleanliness of the kitchen, dining areas, and food storage spaces. When assigned, the Chef Assistant provides guidance to clients or staff participating in kitchen tasks, reinforcing a positive, respectful, and safe environment. Minimum Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or G.E.D. is required.
  • Valid Alabama Driver's License
  • Must be able to pass a drug screen and background check.
  • Must possess and maintain ServSafe certification.
  • Experience with operation of a commercial kitchen is preferred. Job Duties
  • Assist the Chef in preparing daily meals that meet the nutritional needs of all clients and follow the established menu.
  • Support the Chef in completing weekly menus by helping gather inventory information, identifying available donations, and preparing ingredients in advance.
  • Utilize donated food items in meal preparation as directed by the Chef, ensuring proper storage, rotation, and use.
  • Accompany the Chef or independently drive the company vehicle to pick up food donations from approved third‑party donors when assigned.
  • Maintain awareness of inventory levels and assist with organizing, rotating, and labeling food items to reduce waste and shrinkage.
  • Help maintain the cleanliness of the kitchen by completing daily cleaning tasks and participating in scheduled deep‑cleaning routines.
  • Assist with timely meal service by portioning, plating, and distributing meals during assigned mealtimes.
  • Provide guidance and support to clients assigned to kitchen responsibilities, reinforcing safe food‑handling practices and respectful teamwork.
  • Clean and maintain kitchen equipment in a safe, sanitary, and serviceable condition; promptly report any equipment concerns or maintenance needs to the Chef.
  • Assist the Chef in coordinating with vendors, delivery drivers, and donors as needed to support kitchen operations.
  • Help complete basic documentation or reports required by third‑party vendors or donors, as directed by the Chef.
  • Maintain knowledge of kitchen safety and sanitation standards and assist in ensuring compliance with Alabama Department of Mental Health, USDA, and other regulatory requirements.
  • Work collaboratively with all staff using a team‑based approach to support the mission of The Shoulder and promote a positive environment for clients.
  • Perform any other duties assigned by the Chef to support safe, efficient, and mission‑aligned food service operations
