We serve authentic Jamaican cuisine and are looking for someone who can help maintain quality, consistency, speed, and cleanliness in a busy food-service environment. The Assistant Chef will work closely with the kitchen team to prepare food, assist with cooking, maintain proper food portions, keep the kitchen organized, and make sure orders are completed accurately and on time. Responsibilities Assist with daily food preparation and cooking Prepare ingredients according to Island Rootz recipes and portion standards Assist with Jamaican dishes such as jerk chicken, oxtail, curry goat, rice and peas, vegetables, fried foods, and other menu items Complete made-to-order meals in the order they are received Maintain proper food temperatures and food-safety standards Help monitor food levels and notify management when items need to be replenished Follow recipes and portion-control procedures consistently Maintain a clean and organized workstation Clean kitchen equipment, utensils, prep areas, floors, and other assigned areas Properly label, store, rotate, and handle food Assist with opening and closing kitchen duties Help record food waste and inventory when required Work efficiently during busy lunch and dinner periods Follow instructions from the Chef, Kitchen Manager, or management team Qualifications Previous restaurant or commercial kitchen experience preferred Jamaican or Caribbean cooking experience is a plus Ability to work in a fast-paced environment Strong attention to cleanliness and food quality Dependable and punctual Ability to follow recipes and instructions Comfortable standing for extended periods Able to lift and carry typical kitchen supplies and food containers Must work well as part of a team ServSafe or food-handler certification is a plus
