An American-owned sushi restaurant group in New York, New Jersey is seeking an experienced Sushi Chef to join its culinary team. The restaurant is an intimate, counter-style omakase concept where chefs play a central role in creating a memorable dining experience. This position is ideal for a skilled sushi chef with strong technical skills, attention to detail, and the ability to interact professionally with guests. Position Overview The Sushi Chef will prepare and serve the omakase menu from preparation through service, maintaining high standards of quality, presentation, portioning, and timing. The role includes direct guest interaction and close collaboration with the culinary and front-of-house teams. Responsibilities Prepare and serve nigiri, sashimi, hand rolls, and other sushi dishes according to company standards. Execute timed omakase seatings with consistency, precision, and attention to detail. Maintain high standards of food quality, presentation, portion control, and service timing. Engage with guests throughout the omakase experience and respond to requests professionally. Prepare, handle, and store fish and other ingredients in accordance with food safety standards. Maintain a clean, organized, and sanitary work area. Ensure all ingredients and supplies are properly prepared and ready for service. Monitor inventory and communicate ordering and supply needs. Collaborate with fellow chefs and front-of-house staff to ensure smooth service. Follow proper food handling, storage, sanitation, and waste management procedures. Qualifications Minimum 2 years of professional Sushi Chef experience required. Strong knife skills and proficiency in preparing nigiri, sashimi, and hand rolls. Knowledge of fish preparation, handling, storage, and food safety practices. Experience in an omakase or guest-facing sushi concept is preferred . Ability to execute timed seatings with consistency, precision, and composure. Confident, personable, and professional when interacting directly with guests. Reliable, organized, and able to work effectively as part of a team. Ability to work in a fast-paced environment while maintaining quality standards. Guaranteed gross compensation of $1,250-$1,550 per week , based on experience and inclusive of hourly wages and tips.
