Sag Harbor Tavern — Sous Chef Sag Harbor, NY | Seasonal Sag Harbor Tavern, the sister restaurant to Red Hook Tavern, brings classic American tavern fare to the waterfront village of Sag Harbor. Built on the same foundation of thoughtful cooking and genuine hospitality, the kitchen is driven by strong technique, high-quality ingredients, and a focus on exceptional seafood from the surrounding waters. We're looking for an experienced Sous Chef to join the team. This role is hands-on and leadership-driven, working closely with the Executive Chef to maintain standards, support the team, and ensure a high level of consistency across all aspects of the kitchen. The Role The Sous Chef plays a key role in leading the back of house, supporting daily operations, and helping to build a strong, organized, and accountable team. You'll be actively involved in both service and administrative responsibilities, ensuring the kitchen runs smoothly and to standard at all times. What You'll Do Support the Executive Chef in overseeing all kitchen operations Lead by example during prep and service, maintaining a high level of execution and consistency Help build, train, and manage a strong, high-performing kitchen team Assist with scheduling and staffing to meet the needs of the business while managing labor responsibly Coach and develop team members, addressing performance and supporting growth Ensure all recipes and dishes are executed to standard with consistency in quality and portioning Oversee daily prep, mise en place, and service readiness Assist with ordering, inventory management, and administrative tasks Support menu development, recipe testing, and standardization Kitchen Standards & Operations Maintain a clean, organized, and efficient kitchen at all times Ensure proper food storage, labeling, dating, and rotation following FIFO practices Enforce all health department standards and food safety protocols Support the team in opening and closing the kitchen to standard each day Ensure proper use, care, and maintenance of all kitchen equipment What We're Looking For Minimum 4 years of back-of-house experience, with prior leadership experience preferred Strong culinary foundation with solid technique and attention to detail Ability to lead a team while remaining hands-on during service Organized, level-headed, and solution-oriented Strong communication skills and a team-first mindset Comfortable in a fast-paced, high-volume environment Reliable, punctual, and professional Commitment to cleanliness, consistency, and high standards Additional Details Housing is not provided. Applicants must be able to commute to Sag Harbor.
