The Sous Chef serves as a key member of the culinary team, helping to lead kitchen operations, maintain high standards of food quality and safety, and support food service for events, concessions, and the Coffee Bar. Working in close partnership with the Head Chef, the Sous Chef helps ensure a professional, efficient, and welcoming kitchen environment. Position Overview The Sous Chef is responsible for supporting the day-to-day culinary operations of Field Hall, including food preparation, event execution, Coffee Bar production, inventory management, and kitchen leadership. This position serves as the Head Chef's second-in-command and is expected to work independently, supervise kitchen activities when needed, and help maintain standards for quality, consistency, cleanliness, and fiscal responsibility. The ideal candidate is a skilled culinary professional who thrives in a fast-paced environment, takes initiative, and enjoys mentoring and supporting other team members. Key ResponsibilitiesCulinary Production & Event Execution Prepare and execute menu items according to recipes, specifications, and standard operating procedures established by the Head Chef. Oversee food preparation and service execution to ensure quality, consistency, presentation, and portion control. Coordinate kitchen workflow during events and service periods to ensure timely and efficient execution. Assist with menu preparation, special events, receptions, catered functions, and other food service activities. Maintain high culinary standards while adapting to varying event sizes and service styles. Support setup, service, breakdown, and post-event cleanup. Coffee Bar Production & Support Prepare, label, and portion recipes, ingredients, and grab-and-go offerings for Coffee Bar operations. Maintain production schedules and par levels to ensure adequate inventory for daily service. Produce and prepare baked goods, pastries, and related items for current and future service needs. Collaborate with Coffee Bar staff to ensure seamless operations and product availability. Kitchen Operations & Food Safety Maintain a clean, organized, and efficient kitchen environment in compliance with all local, state, and federal health regulations. Ensure proper food storage, labeling, rotation, and temperature controls. Monitor adherence to food safety standards and safe equipment operation procedures. Assist with inventory tracking, receiving, storage, and organization of products and supplies. Identify maintenance, equipment, or operational needs and communicate them promptly to the Head Chef. Participate in routine and deep cleaning schedules to maintain exceptional kitchen standards. Leadership & Team Development Act as a leader within the kitchen, helping to direct workflow and support kitchen staff during service. Serve as a mentor to newer team members by sharing culinary knowledge, techniques, and best practices. Assist with onboarding and training staff on kitchen procedures, safety practices, and organizational standards. Foster a positive, collaborative, and respectful work environment. Step into a supervisory role in the absence of the Head Chef as needed. Financial Stewardship Support cost-control initiatives through proper portioning, inventory management, and waste reduction practices. Monitor product usage and communicate inventory needs effectively. Assist in maintaining efficient labor utilization through organization, preparation, and effective time management. Contribute ideas that improve operational efficiency and reduce costs while maintaining quality. Qualifications Minimum two years of experience in a commercial kitchen, catering operation, restaurant, or similar food service environment preferred. Experience leading or supervising kitchen staff strongly preferred. Knowledge of food preparation techniques, kitchen operations, and food safety practices. Experience with baking and pastry production preferred. Current Washington State Food Worker Card required. ServSafe Certification or equivalent preferred. Strong organizational, communication, and time-management skills. Ability to work independently while contributing to a collaborative team environment. Ability to multitask and remain calm under pressure in a fast-paced event setting. Demonstrated commitment to professionalism, customer service, food quality, and workplace safety.
