Position Summary:
The Housing Monitor plays a critical role in maintaining a safe, respectful, and supportive environment for guests at the homeless shelter. This position is responsible for monitoring shelter activities, enforcing shelter policies, responding to guest needs, and supporting daily operations to ensure the well-being of all residents, staff, and visitors.
Key Responsibilities:
Monitor shelter areas to ensure safety, security, and compliance with shelter rules and policies Conduct regular walk-throughs of the facility and document observations as required Greet guests and visitors in a respectful, trauma-informed manner Enforce shelter guidelines fairly and consistently, using de-escalation techniques when needed Respond to conflicts, emergencies, or crises and follow established protocols Assist with guest check-in/check-out procedures and bed assignments Maintain accurate logs, incident reports, and shift notes Support cleanliness and organization of common areas Communicate effectively with shelter staff, supervisors, and partner agencies Provide basic information, referrals, and assistance to guests as appropriate
Qualifications:
High school diploma or GED required Previous experience in a shelter, social services, security, or customer service role preferred Ability to work with individuals experiencing homelessness, mental health challenges, or substance use disorders with empathy and professionalism Effective communication and conflict-resolution skills Ability to remain calm in high-stress or emergency situations Basic computer and documentation skills CPR/First Aid certification or willingness to obtain HMIS experience preferred (available training)
Physical & Environmental Requirements:
Ability to remain alert during extended shifts, including overnight hours Ability to walk, stand, and climb stairs for extended periods Ability to lift up to 50 pounds if required Work environment may include exposure to challenging behaviors or emotionally intense situations

General Physical Demands:
Working in an office/site requires prolonged sitting at the computer workstation,standing, bending, reaching,andliftingto 40lbs. and some driving.
Work Environment:
Employees work in a dynamic, community-based environment supporting individuals experiencing homelessness or housing instability. The role involves regular interaction with participants who may be navigating complex challenges, including trauma, mental health concerns, substance use, and systemic barriers. Work is grounded in trauma-informed, person-centered, and harm-reduction approaches that prioritize dignity, respect, and choice. The environment is collaborative and mission-driven, requiring flexibility, empathy, and strong professional boundaries. Employees may work across multiple settings, including supportive housing sites, shelters, offices, and community locations. Situations may at times be unpredictable, requiring sound judgment, de-escalation skills, and adherence to safety protocols. Staff are supported through supervision, team collaboration, training, and wellness-focused practices. While the work can be emotionally demanding, it is also deeply meaningful and offers opportunities to make a lasting impact on individual and community wellbeing.
