COOK/BAKER DEFINITION
Under supervision, to do skilled cooking, and/or baking, in the preparation of main dish and other foods in a cafeteria; to serve and package meals; and to do related work as required.
CLASSIFICATION CHARACTERISTICS
Depending upon the needs and assignments, as determined by the Cafeteria Manager, a position may be primarily cooking or baking, or a combination of the two. A new employee would be expected to be skilled in at least one of the two duties and would be expected to acquire the knowledge and abilities of the second within a reasonable training period.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
Cooks and prepares main dish, meat dishes, gravies, soups, sauces, and other items as required; works from prepared menu; prepares and bakes muffins, desserts, cobblers, cakes and other pastries; operates ovens, electrical mixers, and other food service equipment; utilizes left-overs; cleans food service equipment, utensils and appliances; performs cleaning of kitchen, kitchen equipment, and eating utensils; stores supplies and assists with ordering; assists and instructs new personnel in methods and procedures of tasks assigned; takes over in absence of supervisor.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge of:
The proper methods for preparing, cooking, baking, and serving foods in large quantities; basic kitchen utensils and equipment.
Ability to:
Cook and bake skillfully; read, understand and follow recipes; operate common mechanical appliances found in a cafeteria; understand and carry out oral and written directions; instruct and lead helpers; work cooperatively with those contacted in the course of work.
Experience:
Two years at, or equivalent to, the level of Cafeteria Helper I with El Rancho Unified School District, including six months skilled cooking and/or baking experience.
Education:
Persons with the knowledge, abilities, and experience as stated are considered to have the necessary education.
