Job Description

The YMCA seeks a Head Cook to lead daily meal preparation for youth, families, and staff in a mission-driven, community-focused environment. This role plans and cooks nutritious, appealing menus, manages inventory and ordering, and ensures strict compliance with health and safety standards. The Head Cook supervises kitchen assistants and volunteers, supports camps and youth programs with timely meals, and accommodates dietary needs and allergies. Ideal candidates bring strong kitchen leadership, excellent organization, and a passion for serving diverse communities through healthy food. Responsibilities Plan, prepare, and cook nutritious meals and snacks for youth, families, and staff following YMCA guidelines and nutrition standards Develop rotating menus that accommodate dietary needs, allergies, and cultural preferences Maintain a clean, safe, and sanitary kitchen in compliance with health and safety regulations Order, receive, and manage food and supply inventory within budget guidelines Train, schedule, and oversee kitchen assistants and volunteers Monitor portion control and minimize food waste while maintaining quality and presentation standards Collaborate with program staff to support camps, after-school, and special events with appropriate meals Maintain accurate records for temperature logs, inventories, and health inspections Ensure proper food storage, labeling, and rotation (FIFO) Model YMCA values of respect, inclusion, and social responsibility in all interactions Required Skills Menu planning Large-scale meal preparation Food safety and sanitation (Serv Safe standards) Inventory and ordering Kitchen staff supervision Allergy and dietary restriction management Time management and meal scheduling Food cost control and budgeting Temperature logging and recordkeeping Safe food storage and rotation (FIFO)
