Hospital Cook II Job Description The Hospital Cook II prepares and cooks nutritious meals for patients, staff, and visitors while strictly following dietary guidelines and food safety standards. This role works closely with dietitians and healthcare staff to ensure that each meal meets individual patient needs and supports overall health and recovery. Responsibilities Prepare and cook meals according to approved recipes and specific dietary requirements. Follow therapeutic diet guidelines, including low sodium, diabetic, gluten-free, and other specialized diets, while adhering to portion control standards. Collaborate with dietitians and healthcare staff to meet individual patient nutritional needs. Ensure all food is prepared, stored, and served at safe temperatures in compliance with food safety standards. Maintain strict food safety, sanitation, and hygiene practices at all times. Set up and maintain kitchen stations, including grill and line areas, to support efficient food production. Monitor inventory levels and assist with ordering food, ingredients, and kitchen supplies. Clean and sanitize kitchen equipment, utensils, and work areas on a regular schedule. Plate and present meals in an appealing and consistent manner to support patient and guest satisfaction. Assist with meal service, including tray assembly, delivery preparation, and special dietary or menu requests. Follow all hospital policies, procedures, and applicable regulatory guidelines in daily work. Essential Skills Strong knife skills for safe and efficient food preparation. Proficiency in meal and food preparation, including working as a line cook or in a similar role. Ability to follow recipes accurately and consistently. Inventory management skills to track and support ordering of food and supplies. Knowledge of food portioning and portion control standards. Valid food handler certification. Experience in cooking and foodservice operations in a high-volume or institutional setting. Understanding of food safety regulations, sanitation practices, and Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP). Ability to perform dishwashing and general kitchen cleaning tasks as needed. High school diploma or equivalent preferred. 1-2+ years of cooking experience, preferably in healthcare or a high-volume kitchen. Additional Skills & Qualifications Experience preparing meals for large groups or institutional environments. Background working with therapeutic and specialty diets such as low sodium, diabetic, and gluten-free. Ability to work effectively on a grill station and in other hot line positions. Strong teamwork and communication skills to coordinate with dietitians and healthcare staff. Attention to detail to ensure accuracy in dietary requirements and portioning. Work Environment This role is based in a hospital kitchen environment that supports meal service for patients, staff, and visitors. The schedule begins with a training period on a 6:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. shift, then transitions after approximately three weeks to a 10:00 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. shift, with a focus on grill cook and line cook responsibilities. You will work with commercial kitchen equipment, including grills, ovens, steam tables, and dishwashing machines, in a setting that requires adherence to strict sanitation, food safety, and hygiene standards. The environment is fast-paced and team-oriented, with clear procedures and regulatory guidelines to ensure safe and consistent meal production. Job Type & Location This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Henderson, TX. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $14.00 - $15.37/hr.
