Job Description

Job Summary:
The Cook I prepares and serves nutritious, high-quality meals for students and staff in a school cafeteria setting. This position ensures compliance with all food safety, sanitation, and nutritional standards. The Cook I also provides direction and support to kitchen staff, helping to maintain efficient operations and a positive team environment through effective communication and leadership.
Key Responsibilities:
 Prepare, cook, and serve meals according to approved menus, standardized recipes, and portion guidelines.  Supervise and assist food service workers in daily kitchen operations, including meal preparation, serving, and cleanup.  Maintain high standards of food quality, presentation, and safety.  Ensure compliance with all state and federal child nutrition program guidelines (e.g., USDA, NSLP).  Communicate effectively with staff, students, and supervisors to ensure smooth meal service and address operational needs.  Assist with inventory control, ordering, receiving, and proper storage of food and supplies.  Train and mentor new kitchen staff on safety procedures, food preparation, and sanitation standards.  Operate and maintain kitchen equipment safely and efficiently.  Maintain cleanliness and organization of kitchen, serving, and storage areas.  Support special school events or catering needs as assigned.  Duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
 High school diploma or equivalent required.  Minimum of one (1) year of cooking experience in a commercial or institutional kitchen; school food service experience preferred.  Knowledge of safe food handling, preparation, and sanitation practices.  Strong leadership and communication skills.  Ability to work effectively in a team environment and maintain positive relationships with staff and students.  Food Manager's Certificate or ServSafe Certification (required or must be obtained upon hire).  Basic math skills for portioning and recipe measurements.
Physical Requirements:
 Ability to stand, walk, bend, and lift for extended periods.  Lift and carry objects up to 50 lbs.  Work in warm kitchen environments and around hot equipment.
Pay:
$14.20 - $17.11 per hour
