JOB DESCRIPTION
This is a service position responsible for assisting in the maintenance and beautification of the Student Recreation Center, Intramural Fields, and surrounding areas. Performs routine repetitive work in the performance of various physically demanding tasks. Serves as lead worker on assigned projects and in the absence of the Building Operator. Works under general supervision, with moderate latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment. Reports to the Associate Director of Facilities with functional reporting to the Building Operator
II. QUALIFICATIONS
High school diploma or equivalent is required. Three years of related experience is required. Experience in grounds work, gardening, horticulture, farming, or other related occupations is required. Texas Pesticide Applicator License is preferred. Experience with large mowers preferred.
PHYSICAL
Ability to lift 50 pounds or more.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
Cuts weeds and brush with string trimmer; uses power mower to cut grass. Rakes lawns. Trims, edges, waters, and fertilizes shrubs, trees, flowering plants, and lawns. Weeds, plants, and maintains garden beds. Removes dead or diseased plants and trees from campus. Replaces dead or diseased plants and trees as assigned. Performs various outdoor yard maintenance tasks. Loads and unloads trucks. Moves furniture, office equipment, refuse, garbage, and heavy supplies and equipment. Picks up litter in assigned areas. Assists with maintenance of outdoor pool. Operates pressure washer to clean sidewalks, buildings, and other areas. Operates arial lift to assist other staff with custodial/maintenance duties Assists maintenance personnel with tractor related work on intramural fields. Supervises assigned student staff if any.
NON-ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
May prune trees and shrubs to enhance their appearance. May mix and handle insecticides and other chemicals. May assist with maintaining and installing sprinkler systems and greenhouse equipment. May operate a variety of related equipment. Operates university vehicle as necessary. Serves as back up to other departmental staff when assigned. Performs other related duties as assigned.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
The individual must possess the following knowledge, skills, and abilities or be able to explain and demonstrate that the individual can perform the essential functions of the job, with or without reasonable accommodation. Knowledge of grounds maintenance techniques and procedures. Knowledge of the identification, planting, and care of trees, shrubs, and flowers. Knowledge of the proper use of insecticides and fertilizers. Skill in the use of standard tools and equipment of the profession. Skill in the use of groundskeeping hand tools and equipment. Ability to understand and follow instructions. Ability to work evenings, nights, and weekends as necessary. Ability to obtain Texas driver's license, SFA permit, and van certification prior to employment. Physical condition adequate to permit full performance of duties.
