AQUATICS DIRECTOR

POSITION SUMMARY
Reporting to the Vice President of Program Innovation and Quality, the Aquatics Director leads all aquatic programming at the Nashua branch. You'll provide supervision, vision, and hands-on leadership—teaching, lifeguarding, and managing with purpose. You'll build a team, support members on their wellness journeys, and ensure a safe, high-quality aquatic experience.

KEY QUALIFICATIONS
Age 21+ Current certifications (or obtained within 90 days): CPR for the Professional Rescuer, AED, Basic First Aid YMCA or Red Cross Lifeguard & Instructor YMCA Swim Lesson Instructor Pool Operator Certification Oxygen Administration Ability to lead and model safety and service in an aquatic environment Desire and commitment to pursue YMCA Leadership Certification Demonstrated swim and rescue competencies
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Ability to pass water skills test and perform rescues Clear, consistent scanning and communication Strength to lift, move, and assist participants in aquatic emergencies Must be able to sit, stand, and remain alert for extended periods
ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Recruit, hire, train, and coach a diverse aquatic team committed to safety, excellence and member service.
  • Conduct regular team trainings, drills and safety audits to ensure staff development and readiness to respond to emergencies.
  • Foster and uphold a culture of safety across all aquatic operations, ensuring proactive risk management strategies and clear protocols for emergencies, accident prevention and incident response.
  • Develop and manage daily lifeguard and instructor schedules to ensure appropriate coverage following safety ratios and swim lesson standards.
  • Maintain a system to ensure all certifications and trainings are current, including Lifeguarding, CPR and Child Abuse Prevention
  • Monitor and maintain pool chemical levels and logs in compliance with local and state health regulations. Work collaboratively with the Director of Facilities and Risk Management to ensure a regular preventative maintenance schedule and to respond to maintenance needs.
  • Manage and grow a high-quality swim lesson program that meets community needs and supports the YMCA Swim Lesson (YSL) curriculum.
  • Provide tools, training and support to empower instructors to deliver effective, consistent, engaging lessons within the YSL curriculum.
  • Provide best-in-class member service for members and program participants, through timely, consistent and clear communication in all formats.
  • Work collaboratively with the Nashua YMCA branch staff and the Merrimack Aquatics Director to ensure successful program delivery and best-in-class member service.
  • Collaborate with peers to align programming with branch and association goals.
  • Consistently attend trainings and management team meetings to support communication, strategic planning, and teamwork for the Nashua branch and the YMCA of Greater Nashua Association.
  • Develop and manage the Aquatics Department budget with responsibility for meeting or exceeding revenue goals and maintaining cost-effective operations; monitor expenses, track program performance, and identify opportunities for growth or savings.
