Job Description

Position Summary The Assistant Theater Director supports the Theater Director in providing engaging, educational, and high-quality theatrical experiences for elementary, middle, and high school students. This position works closely with the Theater Director during rehearsals and productions, assisting with student instruction, rehearsal management, and various artistic and technical aspects of each production. The ideal candidate has a background in theatre arts and brings experience or skills in one or more areas such as costume design, set design, stage management, musical theatre, or theatrical production. Experience with costume and/or set design is especially desirable. The theater program typically produces one elementary production and two middle/high school productions each year. Regular rehearsals are generally held three times per week for approximately two hours per rehearsal, with additional time required during production and performance weeks. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Attend and actively participate in scheduled rehearsals, production activities, and performances. Assist the Theater Director with planning, organizing, and facilitating rehearsals. Help create a positive, inclusive, and educational environment in which students can develop their theatrical skills and confidence. Provide appropriate supervision, guidance, and support to student performers during rehearsals and productions. Assist students with acting, movement, blocking, music, or other performance elements based on experience and production needs. Provide support in one or more theatrical production areas, such as: Costume design, coordination, and organization, Set design and construction, Stage management, Musical theatre, Props and other technical or artistic production needs. Work collaboratively with the Theater Director to divide production responsibilities based on individual strengths and experience. Assist with coordinating and supporting parent and community volunteers as needed. Help maintain an organized, safe, respectful, and productive rehearsal and performance environment. Assist with production setup, performance activities, and post-production cleanup as needed. Model professional, respectful, and appropriate interactions with students, families, volunteers, and staff. Perform other theater-related duties as assigned by the Theater Director or administration. Time Expectation A minimum of 2 hours/week office hours plus an additional 6 hours a week on site rehearsal support, depending on the time of the year and the needs as agreed upon between you and the theater director (approximately 8 hours/week expected) leading up to performance and tech week. (~30 weeks = 240 hours) Approximately 25+ hours/week during tech week and performance weeks. (~6 weeks = 150 hours) Weekly Schedule Qualifications Preferred Qualifications Previous experience in theatre, performing arts, or theatrical production. Experience or training in one or more of the following areas: Costume design, Set design, Stage management, Musical theatre, Acting or directing, Technical theatre. Experience working with children, adolescents, or student performers. Ability to work collaboratively with a director while also independently managing assigned production responsibilities. Strong communication, organization, and interpersonal skills. Ability to provide students with constructive, age-appropriate instruction and feedback. Dependable and able to consistently attend scheduled rehearsals and performances. Schedule and Productions Monday, Tuesday, and Thursdays from 4:30-6:30 p.m. - Middle/High Drama Rehearsals Friday - 1:30-3:30 p.m. - Elementary Drama Rehearsals - possible as needed. May mean skipping a two hour middle/high session to attend an elementary session. This will be based on your availability and the Theater Director's needs. Supports one elementary production and two middle/high school productions per year. Additional hours will be required during tech rehearsals, dress rehearsals, performances, and other production-related activities. Specific rehearsal and production schedules will be established by the Theater Director. Ideal Candidate The ideal Assistant Theater Director enjoys working with students and understands that school theatre is both a performance opportunity and an educational experience. We are seeking someone who can complement the Theater Director's skills, take ownership of assigned production areas, and help students experience the many creative and collaborative elements that go into producing live theatre.

$12,375.00 per year
