Carbon Department Team Member / Machine Operator American Filter Manufacturing Rensselaer, Indiana Full-Time | Manufacturing Position Overview American Filter Manufacturing is seeking a dependable and detail-oriented team member to join our Carbon Department. This position supports the complete carbon-block manufacturing process, including mixing activated carbon and additives according to specific formulas, operating extrusion and cutting equipment, inspecting finished products, and packaging carbon blocks according to work-order requirements. This is a hands-on manufacturing position for someone who takes pride in producing quality products, following precise instructions, and maintaining a clean and safe work environment. Primary Responsibilities Review work orders, production schedules, formulas, and material requirements. Accurately weigh and mix activated carbon, binders, and other additives according to established formulas. Operate carbon-block extrusion equipment and maintain a consistent material feed. Monitor equipment settings, material flow, temperatures, pressure, extrusion speed, and product appearance. Make routine machine adjustments within established operating guidelines. Operate cutting equipment to cut carbon blocks to the required size and specifications. Inspect finished carbon blocks for correct dimensions, appearance, structural integrity, cracks, chips, and other defects. Package, label, count, box, and palletize finished products according to work orders and customer requirements. Record production quantities, material lot numbers, quality checks, scrap, downtime, and other required information. Perform product changeovers and routine equipment cleaning. Maintain material identification and traceability throughout the production process. Keep equipment, floors, tools, work surfaces, and material-storage areas clean and organized. Follow all safety procedures, machine-guarding requirements, dust-control practices, and PPE requirements. Communicate material shortages, quality concerns, equipment issues, and production status to department leadership. Perform other production duties and cross-train in additional department functions as needed. Qualifications High school diploma or GED preferred. Previous manufacturing, machine-operation, extrusion, compounding, or packaging experience is preferred but not required. Ability to follow formulas, work orders, written instructions, and documented production procedures. Basic math skills and the ability to accurately weigh, measure, and count materials and products. Strong attention to detail and commitment to product quality. Basic mechanical aptitude and the ability to recognize abnormal equipment or production conditions. Ability to work independently and as part of a production team. Dependable attendance and punctuality are essential. Physical and Work Requirements Ability to stand and walk for extended periods. Ability to lift and move materials weighing approximately 40-50 pounds. Ability to push, pull, and maneuver carts, containers, and pallets. Ability to bend, reach, stoop, grasp, and perform repetitive movements. Ability to work around industrial equipment, moving machinery, noise, odors, and varying temperatures. Ability to work safely around powdered carbon and other production materials. Ability to wear all required personal protective equipment, including respirator.
