Job Description

JOB DESCRIPTION
DIET CLERK Position summary: The Diet Clerk is responsible for ensuring accurate implementation of patient diet orders within a hospital setting. This role serves as a critical link to support patient safety, nutritional compliance, and therapeutic treatment plans. The Diet Clerk maintains diet records, processes diet changes, and ensures meals are prepared and delivered in accordance with prescribed dietary requirements, allergies, and behavioral health considerations. Responsibilities include but are not limited to: Receive, review, and process patient diet orders, diet changes, and meal preferences as communicated by nursing staff and clinical dietitians Accurately enter and update diet orders in the diet management system Generate daily meal tickets, tray cards, or reports for kitchen and tray line operations Communicate diet changes promptly to kitchen staff to prevent errors or omissions Maintain strict confidentiality of patient information in compliance with HIPAA regulations Assist in monitoring meal accuracy and resolving tray errors in a timely and professional manner Maintain organized records of patient diets, census reports, and meal counts Support compliance with state, federal, and facility food safety and healthcare regulations Participate in audits, inspections, and quality improvement initiatives as needed Reports to: Food Service Director / Assistant Food Service Director Qualifications High school diploma or GED required Previous experience in healthcare food service, diet office, or hospital setting preferred Basic computer skills and ability to learn diet software systems Strong attention to detail and organizational skills Effective verbal and written communication skills Ability to work in a fast-paced, regulated healthcare environment Performing general physical activities: Ability to sit, stand, and walk for extended periods Ability to read, write, and enter data accurately Ability to work flexible hours, including weekends and holidays as required
