The Manager of Environmental Services provides leadership, accountability, and operational oversight for the university's custodial and environmental services program while serving as a working manager who may support operations during peak demand, special projects, or emergency situations. This position ensures campus facilities meet cleanliness, safety, and regulatory standards through effective staffing models, performance management, budget oversight, and collaboration with outside vendors and campus partners. This position reports to the Facilities Management Director and has oversight for all environmental services staff. This position is classified as non-exempt under FLSA regulations. Serves as the primary Environmental Services liaison to campus leadership and departments Provides leadership and direction for Environmental Services Establishes environmental services goals, performance standards, and service levels that align the mission and values of the university Identify cost control opportunities and efficiency improvements Ensures compliance with health, safety, and regulatory requirements Oversees Head Team Lead and general Team Leads and holds them accountable for consistent supervisory practices, service delivery, staffing effectiveness, and performance outcomes through continuous management and annual evaluations Leads hiring, performance management, and employee relations activities in coordination with Human Resources Ensures and is responsible for overall cleanliness, service quality, and consistency across campus Reviews productivity data, inspections, and quality assurance results Serves as escalation point for complex or high impact operational issues Participates in the planning of major projects such as deep cleaning, shutdowns, or campus transitions Models proper custodial techniques, equipment use, and safety practices Manages the Environmental Services budget Approves supply, equipment, and service purchases Establish inventory standards and evaluates product and vendor performance Oversees equipment lifecycle, maintenance planning, and replacement needs Leads preparation for inspections, and emergency response needs Investigates incidents and oversees corrective actions Supports planning efforts related to major events, renovations, and emergencies Education High school diploma or equivalent. Experience Minimum 5 years of progressively responsible experience in environmental services or facilities operations, including supervisory leadership. Knowledge, Skills, Abilities Comprehensive knowledge of cleaning materials and equipment, understanding their proper use and safety protocols to maintain high standards of cleanliness and hygiene. Strong supervisory skills are essential for leading and motivating staff, including task delegation, performance evaluation, and conflict resolution. Effective communication skills are crucial for coordinating with team members, other departments, and vendors, ensuring clarity and efficiency in all interactions. Proficiency in computer skills is required for managing work schedules, inventory tracking, and communications (email). Additional Requirements This position requires a valid driver's license, and the ability to drive and qualify under the university's insurance carrier when driving a university and/or leased vehicle. Participate in being "on call" after-hours as required. Physical Demand Must be able to climb ladders, and can lift, bend, walk, stand, kneel, reach, etc. Monitors all departmental areas daily; removes heavy garbage, requires occasional use of ladders and hydraulic lifts to clean windows; occasionally sets up and uses scaffolding to hand wash certain windows; delivers supplies and equipment to areas of need daily.
