Part-time or Full-time; including evenings, weekends, holidays, and early mornings as facility operations require About the Position Anchorage Community Ice Management is seeking a dependable, detail-oriented, and hardworking individual to join our team as a Janitor . The Janitor is an important part of the day-to-day operation of the ice arena. This position is responsible for maintaining clean, sanitary, safe, and welcoming facilities for athletes, families, coaches, officials, employees, and other visitors. The Janitor will be responsible for cleaning and maintaining locker rooms, restrooms, common areas, offices, hallways, spectator areas, arena seating, entryways, and other facility spaces. Duties also include trash removal, floor care, cleaning spills, restocking supplies, disinfecting high-touch areas, and assisting with general facility upkeep. Because our facilities experience periods of high traffic during games, tournaments, practices, and special events, this position requires someone who can work efficiently, recognize areas requiring attention, and respond promptly to cleaning or facility needs. The ideal candidate is dependable, attentive to detail, comfortable working independently, willing to take initiative, and able to maintain professional standards in a busy public facility. Starting Pay & Advancement Starting wage: $18.00 per hour / DOE. Employees are eligible for a 90-day performance review . Successful completion of the 90-day review may result in a wage increase based on performance, demonstrated skills, reliability, attendance, and overall job performance . Additional opportunities for advancement and increased responsibility may be available as employees develop their skills and knowledge of arena operations. Essential Duties Cleaning & Custodial Operations Clean and sanitize restrooms, locker rooms, showers, sinks, toilets, urinals, mirrors, counters, and other restroom fixtures. Sweep, mop, vacuum, scrub, and maintain floors throughout the facility. Empty trash and recycling containers and replace liners as needed. Clean and disinfect high-touch surfaces including doors, handles, benches, counters, tables, railings, and drinking fountains. Clean arena seating, spectator areas, hallways, entryways, offices, and common areas. Clean locker rooms between user groups as required. Restock paper products, soap, cleaning supplies, and other facility materials. Clean spills, water, snow, ice, mud, and other debris promptly to maintain safe walking surfaces. Maintain organized and sanitary janitorial closets, storage areas, and cleaning equipment. Properly use cleaning chemicals and equipment according to manufacturer instructions and facility procedures. Perform routine deep-cleaning tasks as assigned. Monitor facility cleanliness throughout the shift and address areas needing attention. Report plumbing problems, leaks, damaged fixtures, broken equipment, vandalism, or other maintenance concerns to management. Maintain dependable attendance and punctuality. Safety & Compliance Follow all facility safety policies, procedures, and emergency protocols. Immediately report unsafe conditions, accidents, injuries, equipment failures, or other hazards to management. Properly handle and store cleaning chemicals and custodial supplies. Use required personal protective equipment and safety equipment. Place appropriate warning signs around wet floors, spills, cleaning operations, or other temporary hazards. Maintain awareness of facility users while performing cleaning duties. Participate in required training related to workplace safety, chemical handling, emergency procedures, and arena operations. Perform all work in accordance with applicable federal, state, and local laws and facility policies. Responsibilities Facility Operations Assist with opening and closing duties. Remove trash from designated areas. Clean and maintain common areas, locker rooms, hallways, restrooms, and other facility spaces as assigned. Assist with maintaining a clean, organized, and safe arena environment. Help prepare the facility for games, practices, tournaments, events, and ice rentals. Assist with moving equipment, benches, goals, tables, chairs, and other arena equipment. Monitor facility conditions and report maintenance or safety concerns to management. Assist with snow, ice, water, and other seasonal facility needs as assigned. Assist arena staff with operational tasks as needed. Follow established procedures for restricted areas, mechanical spaces, and equipment areas. Dependable attendance and punctuality. Customer Service & Public Interaction Provide professional and courteous customer service to arena patrons. Staff the arena office window when assigned. Answer general questions from the public regarding facility operations, schedules, rules, events, and procedures. Provide directions and general assistance to skaters, parents, coaches, officials, rental groups, and other visitors. Assist customers and rental groups with basic facility needs. Direct questions, complaints, or issues requiring management involvement to the appropriate manager. Maintain a professional, helpful, and welcoming presence at the arena office and throughout the facility. Help ensure facility rules and safety expectations are communicated appropriately to patrons. Communication & Teamwork Maintain a professional and courteous presence when interacting with arena patrons. Provide basic directions or facility information when requested. Assist skaters, parents, coaches, officials, rental groups, and visitors with basic facility questions when appropriate. Direct questions, complaints, or issues requiring additional assistance to the appropriate staff member or manager. Maintain a professional appearance and conduct while working in public areas. Perform cleaning duties in a manner that minimizes disruption to customers and facility activities. Help maintain a welcoming and presentable environment throughout the facility. Qualifications Required Ability to work independently and as part of a team. Dependable attendance and punctuality. Ability to communicate professionally with coworkers and members of the public. Ability to follow written and verbal instructions. Strong attention to cleanliness and detail. Ability to safely use cleaning products, chemicals, and custodial equipment. Ability to safely perform physical duties associated with custodial and arena operations. Ability to work evenings, weekends, holidays, early mornings, and variable schedules as required by arena operations. Willingness to clean restrooms, locker rooms, showers, trash, spills, and other areas associated with a public sports facility. Preferred Previous janitorial, custodial, housekeeping, maintenance, or facility-operations experience. Previous experience working in an ice arena, sports facility, recreation center, school, commercial building, or similar environment. Experience operating floor scrubbers, vacuums, carpet cleaners, or other commercial cleaning equipment. Customer service experience. Knowledge of proper cleaning, disinfecting, and chemical-handling procedures. CPR/First Aid certification or willingness to obtain certification. Physical Requirements Standing and walking for extended periods. Bending, reaching, lifting, pushing, and pulling. Regularly lifting and carrying 40+ Lbs. Working in cold environments and around ice and water. Operating and working around mechanical equipment. Performing cleaning and general facility-maintenance tasks. Work Environment Cold temperatures and wet conditions. Exposure to cleaning chemicals and custodial products. Early morning, evening, weekend, and holiday work. Working around ice resurfacing equipment and other facility machinery. Regular interaction with members of the public, youth athletes, parents, coaches, officials, and facility rental groups. Periods of high activity during games, tournaments, practices, and special events. Cleaning restrooms, locker rooms, showers, trash, spills, and other areas associated with a heavily used public facility.
Compensation & Employment Starting Wage:
$18.00 per hour / DOE This is an hourly, non-exempt position. Employees will be paid for all hours worked in accordance with applicable wage and hour laws. Overtime will be paid when required by applicable law. Following approximately 90 days of employment, the employee will receive a performance review. Based on performance, reliability, attendance, and demonstrated competency, the employee may be eligible for an increase in their hourly wage.
