A Janitor or Cleaner provides cleaning and basic maintenance in buildings such as schools, offices, stores, hospitals or hotels. Cleans and polishes floors, removes trash, vacuums carpets, washes windows, cleans bathrooms, stocks building supplies such as light bulbs and paper towels and performs minor repairs as needed. Holds keys for rooms and building entrances and locks or unlocks them as needed.
Position Summary The Full-Time Custodian is responsible for maintaining the cleanliness, sanitation, safety, and overall appearance of campus facilities and grounds. This position performs a variety of custodial and housekeeping duties, including cleaning classrooms, offices, restrooms, common areas, and other college facilities. The Custodian is responsible for ensuring facilities are maintained in a clean, safe, and welcoming condition for students, employees, and visitors while supporting daily campus operations and special events.
Direct Supervisory Responsibility:
NO Essential Duties and Responsibilities Follow established safety procedures, including the proper handling, storage, and disposal of cleaning chemicals and hazardous materials in accordance with applicable regulations and College procedures. Clean, sanitize, and maintain classrooms, offices, restrooms, hallways, stairwells, and common areas. Sweep, mop, scrub, wax, buff, and polish floors. Dust and polish furniture and fixtures. Clean windows, doors, walls, restrooms, and other building surfaces. Empty trash and recycling containers and properly dispose of waste. Replenish restroom and custodial supplies. Maintain custodial storage rooms and inventory of cleaning supplies and equipment. Operate, maintain, and properly store custodial equipment and materials. Assist with room setups, furniture moves, and facility preparation for meetings, special events, and college activities. Assist visitors by providing directions and general information regarding campus facilities. Conduct routine inspections and report maintenance, safety, or security concerns. Assist with securing facilities by locking and unlocking buildings as assigned. Maintain regular and reliable attendance and report to work as scheduled. Report maintenance needs, equipment malfunctions, and facility repair concerns through established College procedures. Comply with all policies of the Alabama Community College System and Gadsden State Community College. Perform other duties as assigned.

Salary Calculation:
For all positions on all Salary Schedules, the salary amount for the selected applicant is determined by step placement on the applicable schedule. Step placement is dependent upon the following: (a) all full-time work experience in public education in Alabama and (b) all other full-time work experience outside of public education in Alabama that, in the sole judgment of the College, directly relates to the requirements of the position.
