A Janitor or Cleaner provides cleaning and basic maintenance in buildings such as schools, offices, stores, hospitals or hotels. Cleans and polishes floors, removes trash, vacuums carpets, washes windows, cleans bathrooms, stocks building supplies such as light bulbs and paper towels and performs minor repairs as needed. Holds keys for rooms and building entrances and locks or unlocks them as needed.

General Description Performs entry-level custodial work; Work involves cleaning and caring for county buildings and premises and maintaining custodial equipment; Works under close supervision with minimal latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment. Work modified schedule as required by the needs of the County. Examples of Work Performed Performs custodial functions such as sweeping, mopping, dusting, spray waxing, and floor stripping. Performs restroom maintenance, replenishing supplies, and applying cleaning chemicals as appropriate. Performs carpet maintenance. Cleans office furniture, walls, windows, and floors; and empties trash. May inspect buildings for cleanliness and report needed repairs as appropriate. Performs related work as assigned. Education and Experience Graduation from high school or equivalent (GED). Experience in custodial work preferred.
Certificates, Licenses and Registration:
Must have a current valid Texas motor vehicle operator's license. CJIS compliance Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Knowledge of cleaning techniques and procedures. Skill in the use of custodial materials and chemicals; and in the operation of custodial equipment. The Custodian performs assigned custodial tasks as it relates to that job location. This includes general cleaning (restroom, offices, others as assigned), buffing, scrubbing, and ability to perform basic tasks of vacuum, sweeping, mopping and use of equipment such as scrubbers, extractors, and buffers.
EXPECTATIONS FOR SATISFACTORY JOB PERFORMANCE
  • Performs all general required tasks as directed by Lead Custodian or Custodian Supervisor
  • Uses floor machines for buffing, stripping, waxing, vacuuming and carpet cleaning safely, according to proper usage, and as agreed to schedule
  • Performs all tasks within proper safety guidelines, company guidelines, and as directed by management
  • Follows all company policies and procedures regarding safety, customer service, proper attire, and working conditions such as hours and timekeeping
  • Performs assignments according to schedule
  • Wears uniform at required worksites
  • Performs janitorial/custodial tasks based on defined scope of work. These are performed to published schedules and within explained guidelines. These tasks often include the following:
  • Empty wastebaskets and replace liner as needed
  • Dust/clean tops of office furniture, desks, and tables
  • Vacuum all carpeting
  • Spot clean soiled areas when needed
  • Clean and sanitize toilets, basins, and urinals
  • Clean sinks, counters, mirrors, and fixtures
  • Sweep and damp mop floor with disinfectant
  • Spot clean walls, partitions, and doors
  • Refill all restroom dispensers as needed
  • Wipe/clean all tabletops and chairs
  • Wipe/clean vending machines and appliances
