Job Description

Under the direction of the site administrator(s) and Custodial Supervisor, the Lead Custodian I coordinates and performs custodial operations at an assigned school site; ensures facilities are clean, safe, orderly, and operational; supports site activities and events; and plays a critical role in maintaining safe, healthy, and well-maintained learning and working environments that directly support student success and overall site functionality.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED
Supervision is received from the site administrator(s) or designee. The Custodial Supervisor provides program oversight, guidance, and direction related to custodial standards, procedures, and best practices. The Lead Custodian provides functional lead direction, process guidance and work coordination to assigned staff but does not exercise formal supervisory authority.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
Custodial staff are essential to the daily operation of school sites and District facilities. Incumbents provide highly visible services that directly impact the cleanliness, safety, and overall condition of learning environments, requiring reliability, attention to detail, and a strong commitment to service. The Lead Custodian classifications are responsible for the ongoing coordination of custodial services at an assigned site. Incumbents perform the full range of custodial duties while providing functional and technical oversight of custodial staff. Lead Custodians serve as the primary site contact for custodial operations and facilities readiness. Incumbents ensure work is completed in accordance with established standards and schedules and support site administration in maintaining safe and functional learning environments. Incumbents are responsible for coordinating custodial operations in alignment with District procedures, including identifying facility needs and submitting and monitoring facilities work orders. Assignment to Lead Custodian I and II classifications is based on operational complexity, including campus size, number of buildings, student and staff population, hours of operation, frequency of events, and overall facilities usage. Positions assigned to Lead Custodian I typically support sites with moderate operational complexity. Work involves coordinating custodial activities for sites with standard schedules, limited evening or weekend usage, and fewer facilities or buildings.

Provides high-quality customer service to site administrators, staff, students, and community members by maintaining a visible, responsive presence on campus; addressing custodial needs and requests with professionalism and a solution-oriented approach; communicating clearly regarding service status and timelines; and supporting clean, safe, and orderly learning and working environments. E Takes pride in maintaining assigned facilities to high standards of cleanliness, presentation, and overall condition, contributing to a positive and welcoming environment for students, staff, and the community. E Assigns, schedules, and coordinates custodial work; organizes and leads group custodial tasks and projects; and monitors and checks the work of custodial staff to ensure completion, quality, and adherence to established standards and expectations. E Inspects facilities to ensure cleanliness, safety, and adherence to District standards. E Identifies maintenance, repair, and safety needs that exceed custodial scope; submits and coordinates facilities work orders in the District's work order system; monitors progress and follows up as needed to support timely resolution; and communicates status updates to site administration and the Custodial Supervisor. E Serves as the primary point of contact for site administrators regarding custodial operations and facility readiness. E Coordinates site setups for meetings, events, and activities, including large-scale or high-volume events as assigned. E Ensures custodial operations support the preparation, maintenance, and restoration of facilities for daily operations, instructional programs, and scheduled activities. E Monitors supply usage and oversees inventory of custodial materials and equipment; coordinates ordering and replenishment to ensure adequate supply levels. E Provides training, guidance, and direction to custodial staff in proper cleaning methods, safety procedures, and equipment use; supports onboarding and reinforces established standards and best practices. E Performs the full range of custodial duties as required to maintain assigned facilities. E Sweeps, mops, scrubs, waxes, and polishes floors; vacuums and shampoos carpets; and maintains floor care equipment. E Cleans and sanitizes restrooms, including sinks, toilets, partitions, mirrors, and fixtures; replenishes supplies as needed. E Empties trash and recycling receptacles and disposes of waste in accordance with established procedures. E Cleans windows, walls, desks, furniture, and other surfaces. E Sets up, arranges, and takes down furniture and equipment for meetings, events, and activities. E Performs minor maintenance and light facilities and grounds tasks as required, including, but not limited to, replacing light bulbs; installing or replacing basic fixtures such as light switch covers, soap dispensers, and toilet paper holders; making basic adjustments to furniture and fixtures; and performing incidental grounds upkeep such as raking or blowing leaves, pulling weeds, and general cleanup to maintain safe and orderly conditions between routine grounds maintenance services; refers work that exceeds custodial scope to maintenance or grounds personnel. E Operates custodial equipment and tools in accordance with established procedures. E Follows established procedures for the safe use, handling, and storage of cleaning chemicals and equipment. E Assists with emergency cleanup and response, including spills, weather-related impacts, and safety incidents. E Assists maintenance and operational staff as needed for projects, coverage, emergencies, or special events. E Participates in the development and implementation of department or goals, objectives, policies, and procedures; provides site-level input to support continuous improvement of custodial operations. E Participates in ongoing training and professional development to maintain knowledge of custodial practices, safety standards, and operational procedures. E Performs other related duties as assigned that are appropriate within the professional capacity of the Lead Custodian I classification.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Physical Activities:
Requires a high level of physical activity, including continuous walking and frequent standing throughout the workday. Duties regularly involve bending, stooping, twisting, and reaching, as well as occasional climbing, squatting, kneeling, and pushing or pulling. The work includes repetitive manual tasks and the operation of custodial tools and equipment, requiring both fine and gross motor skills to handle cleaning materials, machinery, and facility fixtures effectively.
Lifting Requirements:
Requires frequent lifting and carrying of objects weighing up to 25 pounds, such as cleaning supplies, equipment, and classroom furniture. Occasional lifting of items weighing between 26 and 50 pounds, including larger equipment or supplies, and seldom lifting of heavier items between 51 and 100 pounds, typically with assistance.
Sensory Requirements:
Requires continuous use of vision and hearing to perform essential duties safely and effectively. Employees must frequently communicate verbally and occasionally read and write to follow instructions and complete basic documentation. The role involves sustained attention to routine tasks, adherence to safety procedures, and the ability to respond appropriately to instructions and environmental conditions.
WORK CONDITIONS
Work is performed in a variety of indoor and outdoor environments across school site.
Exposure Conditions:
Work may involve exposure to dust, debris, and seasonal environmental conditions, including heat, temperature fluctuations, and wet conditions. Surfaces may be uneven, elevated, or slippery.
Noise Level:
Work is frequently performed in environments with moderate to loud noise levels due to the operation of tools, machinery, and equipment.
Safety Considerations:
Work involves inherent risks associated with electrical systems, mechanical equipment, elevated work areas, and construction-related activities. In addition to personal compliance, incumbents are responsible for reinforcing safe work practices, monitoring work conditions, and supporting adherence to safety procedures across assigned work activities. Required use of personal protective equipment (PPE) is expected.
QUALIFICATIONS
Any other combination of experience, training, and/or education that could likely provide the desired knowledge, skills, and abilities may be considered. Education High school diploma or equivalent is desirable. Experience Two (2) years of increasingly responsible custodial experience, including demonstrated ability to coordinate or provide direction to others, is desirable.
LICENSES AND/OR CERTIFICATES A
valid California driver's license may be required This recruitment is Open and Promotional and is being conducted under the Inglewood Unified School District Merit System and Personnel Commission Rules. The recruitment is open to qualified members of the public and eligible District employees who meet the established minimum qualifications. EXAMINATION PLAN
Minimum Qualifications Screening — Qualifying Applications will be reviewed to determine whether applicants meet the established minimum qualifications. Applicants must provide complete and sufficiently detailed information regarding their education and experience. A résumé may be attached but will not substitute for a complete application. Meeting the minimum qualifications does not guarantee advancement to subsequent phases of the examination process. Training & Experience Evaluation (SME Review) Tentatively scheduled for the week of September 21st Applicants who meet the minimum qualifications may have their application materials evaluated by subject-matter experts to assess the depth, breadth, relevance, and recency of their education, training, and experience as they relate to the Human Resources Assistant classification. The evaluation may consider job-related factors including progressively responsible administrative support experience; customer service; data entry, records maintenance, and data accuracy; use of computerized information systems and technology; recruitment and selection support; employee or personnel records and transactions; Human Resources support; and experience within a public agency or local educational agency. Applicants should provide complete and detailed information in their application materials. Only the highest-rated candidates may be invited to advance to the next phase of the examination process. Written/Performance Examination — 50% Tentatively scheduled for the week of October 5th The written/performance examination is anticipated to assess job-related competencies including attention to detail and data accuracy, written communication, technology and information systems aptitude, customer service judgment, organization and prioritization, confidentiality, records practices, and problem solving. The examination may include multiple-choice, written response, data review, and/or job-related performance exercises. Structured Oral Technical Examination — 50% Tentatively scheduled for the week of October 12th The structured oral technical examination is anticipated to assess job-related competencies including customer service and communication, judgment and problem solving, technology adaptability, organization and management of competing priorities, attention to detail, confidentiality, collaboration, adaptability, and readiness to perform any transportation needs. Candidates must achieve the required passing score on each scored examination component in order to continue in the selection process. Examination components, weights, passing scores, and the number of candidates invited to advance may be adjusted based upon the needs of the recruitment and in accordance with applicable Personnel Commission Rules. Final Interviews Tentatively scheduled for the week of October 19th The top three (3) ranks of the Eligibility List (see below) will be referred to the hiring authority for final interviews.
PROMOTIONAL CANDIDATES
Eligible promotional candidates who successfully complete the examination process will receive applicable promotional credits added to their final passing score in accordance with Personnel Commission Rule 4.200.15.
Promotional credits may include:
Seniority Credit — Up to 5
Points:
One (1) point for each year of service with Inglewood Unified School District, not to exceed five (5) points. Attendance Credit — Up to 2
Points:
Two (2) points may be awarded for no absences during the immediately preceding school year, or one (1) point for no more than three (3) absences during the immediately preceding school year. Performance Credit — Up to 2
Points:
Two (2) points may be awarded when the promotional candidate's most recent performance evaluation reflects an overall rating of satisfactory or better. Promotional candidates may receive a maximum of nine (9) promotional credit points. Promotional eligibility and the calculation and application of all promotional credits will be determined in accordance with applicable Personnel Commission Rules.
ELIGIBILITY LIST
Candidates who successfully complete all required examination components and achieve the required passing scores will be placed on an eligibility list in rank order based upon their final scores. For eligible promotional candidates, applicable promotional credits will be added to the final passing score prior to establishment of the eligibility list. Open and promotional candidates will be merged onto a single eligibility list in accordance with Personnel Commission Rules. Appointment from the eligibility list will be made in accordance with applicable Education Code provisions and Personnel Commission Rules. Examination components, dates, weights, and other details are subject to modification based upon operational needs and the applicant pool. Candidates will be notified of applicable examination requirements and scheduling.
