Job Description

Summary Bethany Lutheran Church is seeking a dependable, detail-oriented full-time Custodian to maintain a clean, safe, and welcoming church campus. The ideal candidate is friendly, exercises discretion, follows a set schedule of work and is also willing to be responsive to needs as they arise. This position performs routine cleaning, room and event setups, riser setup and teardown, minor facility tasks, and basic grounds support. The Custodian works under the direction of the Maintenance and Facilities Lead, follows an established schedule of work and supports worship services, ministry programs, staff activities, and community events. 1)

Primary Responsibilities:
Cleaning and Facility Care
  • Clean and sanitize common areas, restrooms, offices, classrooms, meeting rooms, worship spaces, hallways, entrances, and kitchens.
  • Vacuum carpets and entrance mats and sweep, mop, scrub, and spot-clean hard floors.
  • Empty trash and recycling containers and refill soap, paper towel, toilet paper, and other dispensers.
  • Clean kitchen counters, sinks, food carts, appliances, and food-service areas according to established schedules.
  • Complete periodic deep-cleaning projects, including carpet cleaning, floor scrubbing, and detailed restroom cleaning.
  • Maintain orderly custodial closets, carts, tools, and equipment. Room and Event Support
  • Review Bethany's electronic facility calendar (E-space) and complete assigned room setups and takedowns, including moving and arranging tables, chairs, risers, staging components, and other furnishings.
  • Provide custodial support during worship services, meetings, programs, and special events when scheduled.
  • Respond to spills, restroom needs, trash accumulation, and other custodial concerns during events. Facility, Grounds, and Safety Support
  • Perform minor facility tasks when trained and authorized, including replacing accessible light bulbs, tightening loose hardware, and assembling furnishings.
  • Help keep entrances, sidewalks, loading areas, and exterior spaces clean and free of debris.
  • Assist with snow and ice removal and basic seasonal grounds work when assigned.
  • Identify and promptly report maintenance, safety, security, cleanliness, and supply concerns.
  • Safely operate vacuums, carpet extractors, automatic floor scrubbers, floor machines, and other custodial equipment.
  • Follow established chemical-handling, personal protective equipment, safety, and security procedures.
  • Properly safeguard church keys, access cards, tools, equipment, and supplies.

Qualifications:
  • Previous custodial, janitorial, housekeeping, event-setup, or facility-care experience is preferred.
  • Ability to follow written and verbal instructions.
  • Ability to complete assigned work efficiently and without continuous supervision.
  • Dependable attendance and professional communication.
  • Basic working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite/Microsoft 365 applications, including Outlook, Excel, Word, and Teams, and the ability to learn and use electronic scheduling and work-order systems.
  • Willingness to learn the safe operation of custodial equipment and proper use of cleaning chemicals.
  • Ability to work respectfully around staff, congregation members, children, older adults, volunteers, and community groups.
  • Employment is contingent upon satisfactory completion of job-related background checks in accordance with applicable law.
  • Ability to work a 36-40-hour weekly schedule that may include weekday, evening, Saturday, and Sunday shifts.
  • Mechanical aptitude and comfort using basic hand tools are a plus but are not required.

Physical Requirements:
This position requires extended periods of standing and walking, along with frequent bending, reaching, kneeling, squatting, twisting, and stair climbing. The employee must be able to regularly lift and carry up to 50 pounds independently and move items weighing up to 75 pounds with team assistance or appropriate equipment. The position involves exposure to cleaning chemicals, dust, odors, noise, changing temperatures, and occasional inclement weather. Reasonable accommodations may be made for qualified individuals with disabilities. 6)
Schedule Expectations:
This is a full-time, benefits-eligible position normally scheduled for 36-40 hours per week. The employee will normally work five days per week and receive two days off each week. Workdays and shifts may vary based on worship services, meetings, special events, room setups, and campus operational needs.
Available shifts may include:
    Monday/Tuesday/Wednesday:
    2:00 p.m.-10:00 p.m.
      Thursday:
      2:30-10:30 p.m.
        Friday/Saturday:
        8:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m.
          Sunday:
          7:00 a.m.-3:00 p.m. When contacted by the Maintenance and Facilities Lead, the employee may be required to report outside the regularly scheduled shift, sometimes with limited notice, to assist with snow and ice removal from assigned entrances, sidewalks, and pedestrian areas. All time worked, including applicable overtime, will be recorded and paid. The weekly schedule, including scheduled days off, will be established by the Maintenance and Facilities Lead and communicated as far in advance as practical.
