Essential Job Duties The following duties are normal for this position. Other duties may be required and assigned. Receive, identify, record and store all property and evidence. Enter and maintain all information pertaining to property and evidence into department's computer system. Maintain, store and make copies of property receipts. Transport evidence to and from the crime lab or final disposition locations and maintain status reports and results. Ensure proper care is taken of evidence (cash, narcotics, etc.) Notify and return items and evidence to the owners. Handle all telephone calls pertaining to evidence. Maintain paperwork and actual physical destruction of property and evidence. Verify quantity and weight of submitted drugs. Prepare court orders for drug disposal and destroy drugs. Assist the state attorney's office and maintain state attorney's notices on disposition of cases. Notify case officers in the event a notice of disposition is received from the state attorney. Testify in court or depositions. Assist officers and detectives in handling of evidence. Verify case dispositions. Destroy completed cases. Ensure property is checked through
NCIC/FCIC
to see if reported stolen, before disposal. Prepare reports. Maintain records and files. Ship and receive department deliveries Ensure that all property and evidence storage areas (Rooms 1 & 2), offices and bulk storage areas are cleaned regularly. Fosters positive employee relations and employee morale on a City-wide basis. Minimum Qualifications High school graduate or in possession of an acceptable equivalency diploma. Knowledge of policies and procedures in the control of evidence. Requires demonstrated ability to utilize personal computer and office software such as MS Word, MS Excel and electronic mail. Working knowledge of Superion/RMS software is highly preferred. Knowledge of local and state laws that pertain to evidence. Ability to keep complex records. Ability to operate computers and modern office equipment. Ability to work effectively in a limited time frame. Ability to coordinate activities with other departments, officials and police employees. Ability to understand and follow written and oral instructions with limited supervision. Ability to type accurately. Skill in operating a computer (data entry). Ability to communicate effectively in oral and written form. Ability to adapt to an evolving and continually improving environment. Hours may include early-start days and extend into early evenings. Occasionally, unscheduled overtime may be required to cover shifts. Personnel do not work City-defined holidays but may be subject to evidence-related call outs and some weekends for unscheduled or special events.
