What they do
A Janitor or Cleaner provides cleaning and basic maintenance in buildings such as schools, offices, stores, hospitals or hotels. Cleans and polishes floors, removes trash, vacuums carpets, washes windows, cleans bathrooms, stocks building supplies such as light bulbs and paper towels and performs minor repairs as needed. Holds keys for rooms and building entrances and locks or unlocks them as needed.

Qualifications:
- Ability and willingness to follow written and oral instructions
- Ability to relate well to children, other staff members, and the public
- Knowledge of the materials, methods, equipment and practices used in cleaning and minor repair operations
Preferred Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Superintendent may find appropriate.
Performance Responsibilities:
1. Participates in the general cleaning and general maintenance of the facility. 2. Makes minor repairs and adjustments to building fixtures and equipment as prescribed by the Custodial Crew Leader/administrator. 3. Follows procedures, prescribed by the building administrator, for routine security and safety for the students, staff, and visitors to the facility. 4. Reports maintenance/repair needs to Custodial Crew Leader /Administrator. 5. Collects and disposes of refuse; facilitates others' daily disposal of recyclable materials. 6. Dusts and cleans furniture. 7. Vacuums, dry mops, sweeps, wet mops, strips, waxes and polishes floors in accordance with SREF standards. 8. Cleans and washes windows, mirrors, walls, (chalk) / white boards, desks, sinks, toilets, and other soiled areas. 9. Moves, with others, furniture or equipment within the work location when proper and safe moving equipment is available. 10. Keeps areas such as walks, driveways, playground areas, etc. clean. 11. Replaces light bulbs, fluorescent lamps/other lighting devices, and soiled ceiling tiles, when needed. 12. Sets up and cleans facility after community usage of facility. 13. Communicates with (Custodial Crew Leader) in maintaining a proper inventory of equipment, supplies, and other necessary, job-related items. 14. Attends job-related workshops and training programs. 15. Assembles furniture and equipment. 16. Works additional hours upon reasonable request. 17. Maintains an effective working relationship with students, other employees, and visitors to the facility. 18. Performs other job-related functions as may be assigned by the building administrator.
