A Janitor or Cleaner provides cleaning and basic maintenance in buildings such as schools, offices, stores, hospitals or hotels. Cleans and polishes floors, removes trash, vacuums carpets, washes windows, cleans bathrooms, stocks building supplies such as light bulbs and paper towels and performs minor repairs as needed. Holds keys for rooms and building entrances and locks or unlocks them as needed.

Job Description

This position is for second shift, 4pm to 12am Monday through Friday. A $0.50 per hour shift differential will be added to base hourly rate. Must be able to perform general custodial cleaning duties to include but not limited to sweeping, mopping, dusting and wiping, shampooing, vacuuming, stripping, waxing, disinfecting restrooms, washing windows, climbing a ladder, and moving furniture and equipment. Must be able to complete routine daily tasks independently. Report to supervisor areas that need repairs. Must be pleasant and helpful but should handle special requests only with the consent of supervisor, director, or his/her designee. Constant (67-100% Clean and disinfect restrooms and fill all dispensers and clean and empty all trash receptacles. Clean classrooms and clean and empty all trash receptacles. Clean offices and lounges and clean and empty all trash receptacles. Clean hallways and stairwells and clean and empty all trash receptacles. Clean laundry facilities and empty all trash receptacles. Clean elevator and elevator track. Open/close buildings. Clean entrance areas inside and outside the building and clean and empty all trash. Frequent (34-66%) Clean ceiling air vents and light fixtures and replace light bulbs and ceiling tile as needed. Clean furniture in offices and lounges. Assist with tear-down and set-up of furniture and equipment. Wash windows. Occasional (10-33%) Strip and wax hard surface floors. Shampoo carpeted areas. Clean storerooms and mechanical rooms. Move furniture and equipment. Snow removal and ice melt application to building entries.
PERFORMANCE EXPECTATIONS
Demonstrate current knowledge of techniques, methods, and procedures to perform the essential duties of the job. Demonstrate knowledge of the care and use of cleaning supplies. Be thorough, neat, and accurate in completion of assigned duties. Be able to work efficiently and accurately in an atmosphere of frequent interruption in order to complete duties as assigned. Keep area clean and attractive at all times to maintain a safe environment for employees to work in and attractive for students and visitors. Demonstrate initiative to point out and develop methods and techniques to better perform assigned duties. Be able to perform routine tasks without supervision. Needs to be a self-starter and be able to see areas that need attention before a complaint is registered. Be able to deal effectively with problems and exercise good judgment when making decisions. Demonstrate being able and willing to represent Iowa Central Community College in a positive manner with students, clients, suppliers, and the community we serve. Demonstrate ability to communicate with other custodians and deal effectively and courteously with College personnel. Be able to react to change productively and be able to handle other duties as assigned. Be punctual, demonstrate being flexible and dependable; be able to deal positively with high pressure deadlines; demonstrate a high level of organizational skills; and possess the knowledge of and demonstrate the proper safe use and care of custodial supplies and equipment.
