A Janitor or Cleaner provides cleaning and basic maintenance in buildings such as schools, offices, stores, hospitals or hotels. Cleans and polishes floors, removes trash, vacuums carpets, washes windows, cleans bathrooms, stocks building supplies such as light bulbs and paper towels and performs minor repairs as needed. Holds keys for rooms and building entrances and locks or unlocks them as needed.

ANNOUNCEMENT
Southwestern Illinois College is accepting applications for part-time, grant-funded, Custodians. These positions are covered under the agreement between the College and Local 148. AFL-CIO. Your application will be placed in a pool for review as positions become available.
POSITION DESCRIPTION
These are part-time positions assigned to work up to 28 hours per week. The work involves considerable manual labor throughout the work shift. Materials used in the performance of duties include various chemical cleaning agents and supplies as well as various chemical fuels, oils, herbicides, and fertilizers for grounds. Equipment used in the performance of duties includes power-assisted cleaning equipment and/or power-assisted mowers and trimmers as well as tractors and light trucks. The work is performed in accordance with the Mission and Values of Southwestern Illinois College. This position is contingent upon external funding.
QUALIFICATIONS
Functional reading and basic math skills as evidenced by a High School Diploma or GED certificate is required. Ability to operate power-assisted equipment and to use chemical cleaning agents in an approved manner to avoid risk of injury to self or to others and to avoid damage to equipment, fixtures and furnishings is required. Prior custodial or groundskeeping work experience of a minimum of one year is preferred. Valid Driver's License is strongly preferred.
STARTING PAY AND HOURS
Effective August 1, 2026, starting rate is $17.85 per hour, up to 28 hours per week
