A Janitor or Cleaner provides cleaning and basic maintenance in buildings such as schools, offices, stores, hospitals or hotels. Cleans and polishes floors, removes trash, vacuums carpets, washes windows, cleans bathrooms, stocks building supplies such as light bulbs and paper towels and performs minor repairs as needed. Holds keys for rooms and building entrances and locks or unlocks them as needed.

Full-Time, Non-Exempt Reports to: Custodial Supervisor or Building Foreman Position summary: Performs custodial services, including cleaning and securing school premises, to facilitate the learning process.
Position responsibilities:
Exhibits a cheerful and customer-service oriented attitude to all staff and student personnel. Keeps assigned areas clean and orderly at all times. Follows cleaning schedules provided, being mindful of quality, efficiency, frequency, and safety. Notifies immediate supervisor of any facilities issues requiring attention. In the course of normal duties, inspects facilities to ensure for safety and security by performing such tasks as locking doors and windows after operating hours. Works in compliance with established safety procedures. Works additional areas, as required, in the absence of fellow custodians. Other duties as assigned.
Essential skills and experience:
High School diploma or equivalent preferred Physically able to perform the essential functions of the position Ability to lift 50 lbs. Possesses a basic understanding of the chemicals, work processes, and equipment used in cleaning schedules. Ability to read and explain basic operating instructions Ability to work as part of a team Ability to operate professional floor cleaning equipment and snow removal equipment Available to work various shifts as required Detail-oriented Valued but not required skills and experience: Experience working in a high school setting Custodial experience preferred Reporting to this position: N/A Physical demands and work environment: The physical demands and work environment characteristics described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Physical demands:
While performing duties of this job, employee is frequently required to stand; walk; stoop; kneel; crouch; use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects; reach with hands and arms; talk and hear. The employee is occasionally required to climb ladders and/or balance. Employee must occasionally lift and/or move more than 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
Work environment:
The noise level in the work environment is usually minimal to moderate.
Terms of Employment:
12-month work year; Starting wage is $23.00-$24.15/hour based on education and verified experience IMRF pension 30-minute lunch and two paid 15-minute breaks Sick, personal, and vacation days 15+ paid holidays Generous fringe benefits as provided by the current AFT/IFT Local #943 Agreement Annual performance evaluation in accordance with the current AFT/IFT Local #943 Agreement and Board policy.
