A Janitor or Cleaner provides cleaning and basic maintenance in buildings such as schools, offices, stores, hospitals or hotels. Cleans and polishes floors, removes trash, vacuums carpets, washes windows, cleans bathrooms, stocks building supplies such as light bulbs and paper towels and performs minor repairs as needed. Holds keys for rooms and building entrances and locks or unlocks them as needed.

QUALIFICATIONS
1. High school diploma. 2. Some housekeeping experience. 3. Some maintenance experience. 4. Knowledge of technology equipment desirable. 5. Valid driver's license.

JOB GOAL
To maintain the school environment in a manner most conducive to learning.
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Performs housekeeping tasks for assigned district buildings as follows: a.
Daily:
  • Opens building in morning
  • Cleans chalkboards
  • Empties wastebaskets and pencil sharpeners
  • Dust mops floors
  • Sweeps and wet mops floors
  • Sweeps and wet mops stairs, behind doors and corners
  • Vacuums carpets
  • Spot cleans door frames, walls, light switches, push plates and kick plates
  • Cleans glass
  • Cleans and sanitizes drinking fountains
  • Sanitizes washrooms and disinfects toilets, urinals and sinks
  • Secures building and shuts windows
  • Sets up, takes down and cleans the lunchroom area.
b.
Weekly:
  • High dusts furniture, tops of doors, book shelves, window ledges
  • Damp wipes furniture
  • Sanitizes all telephones
  • Full cleans rooms according to schedule
  • Cleans out janitor's closet
  • Checks fire extinguishers and maintains preventive maintenance schedule
  • Cleans boiler room
  • High dusts corridors c. Summer and Vacation Cleaning
  • Floor stripping and finishing
  • Wash walls and furniture
  • Shampoo carpets
  • Clean light fixtures d.
As Needed:
  • Cleans bodily fluid spills
  • Refills all restroom dispensers (paper towels, soap)
  • Notifies appropriate authorities of observed irregularities
  • Spot mops rooms
  • Refills pop machine
  • Cuts grass, rakes and polices litter/general grounds maintenance
  • Keeps entryways and sidewalks free of snow and ice using snow blower and salt spreader
  • Accommodates teacher requests (desk adjustments, hanging tack strips)
  • Performs simple repair and trouble shooting of technology equipment 2. Performs simple maintenance tasks as needed:
  • Repairs and maintains heating related equipment (filter changes, etc.)
  • Repairs and maintains plumbing (faucet leaks, etc.)
  • Repairs and maintains electrical systems (replacement of outlets, switches, etc.)
  • Carpentry work (installing new shelving, painting, drywall repairs, etc.)
  • Minor roof repairs (caulking, sealing)
  • Maintains custodial equipment and custodial supply inventory
  • Trains and oversees summer crew member 3.
Performs other duties as assigned
CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
Twelve-month position with salary and compensation as established by the board of education.
EVALUATION
Performance is evaluated by the building principal with input from the facilities manager.
