Immediately Job Description Overview of the
Position:
Skilled manual work relating to the care and maintenance of a school building or buildings, surrounding grounds, and related equipment; all other related work as required. Works under the general supervision of the Facilities Manager and/or Head Custodian to perform building maintenance, repairs, and custodial functions, following acceptable standards of quality and performance, requiring a moderate measure of responsibility and judgment in determining method of completion. Work is generally performed indoors, with occasional exposure to rain, snow and other weather conditions when maintaining exterior of buildings and grounds; regular exposure to dust, dirt, fumes, chemicals, and the noise associated with cleaning and maintenance equipment; may be assigned evening and/or weekend hours. Makes frequent contacts with students, teachers and staff.
Primary Functions:
  • Performs minor carpentry, plumbing, and electrical duties as directed
  • Makes repairs to furniture, buildings, and equipment
  • Operates and makes minor repairs to heating and cooling systems including thermostat and safety controls
  • Moves and sets up furniture and equipment
  • Collects and disposes of refuse
  • Performs ground maintenance including caring for lawns, shrubs, plants, and trees: weeds and waters lawns, flowers, and plants; prunes trees and shrubs; cuts grass, trims hedges, shrubs, and bushes; rakes and packs leaves; removes snow in winter
  • Lays out and prepares athletic fields for use: rakes, fills in holes, lines out baselines, etc; maintains grounds and fields, picking up litter, and maintains neatness of streets and sidewalks surrounding school buildings.
  • Performs a variety of cleaning and maintenance tasks; sweeping, dusting, vacuuming, washing floors, cleaning restrooms, polishing and waxing furniture and floors, and cleaning common areas
  • May open building(s): unlock doors, turn lights on, checks heating and cooling systems, etc.
  • May close building(s): lock doors, turn lights off, secures building(s)
Education/Formal Training Required:
High School diploma preferred; two (2) years of experience in building maintenance work; or any equivalent combination of education and experience.
Certification/License Required:
MA Class D Driver's License required; MA Commercial Driver's License preferred Hiring is contingent upon successful CORI and SAFIS clearance.
Knowledge and Skills Required:
General knowledge of building maintenance and methods. General knowledge of the principles and practices of carpentry, painting, plumbing, and wiring. Ability to read and follow instructions on the labels of chemical and cleaning supplies. Ability to use hand tools for repairs and maintenance. Basic skills in performing preventive maintenance on buildings and equipment. Ability to follow oral and written instructions Ability to complete tasks in a timely fashion.
Equipment Used:
Hand tools, vacuum cleaners, buffers, snow blowers, electric drills, and other custodial equipment; operates an automobile or light truck, as well as some heavy equipment; may be required to wear protective clothing and mask. Physical Demands (if applicable): Constant moderate to strenuous physical effort with frequent exertion, crouching, bending, and climbing is required. Position requires extensive walking, reaching, standing, stooping and climbing hen performing functions. Frequently required to move (push, pull or lift) objects weighing up to 60 pounds or more. Must be able to access all levels and areas to be cleaned and maintained.
