Working Conditions Exposure to extreme weather conditions including subzero temperatures and hot and humid conditions. Employees in this job classification are designated as essential employees and must report to work as scheduled by their supervisor, in the event of emergencies which include but are not limited to: (snow and ice removal, flooding, loss of electricity, etc.), which may also entail working during periods of time that the college is normally closed including nights and weekends. Basic Statement of Responsibilities The Campus Custodian is part of a crew responsible for the overall cleaning, grounds maintenance, and general upkeep of the facilities comprising the physical plant of Allegany College of Maryland . The campus custodian functions as a member of the Physical Plant department, working cooperatively to maximize effectiveness of the delivery of services to staff and students. Essential Functions Uses appropriate equipment (manual and electronic) to clean and maintain floors in classrooms, offices and corridors. Collects and disposes of trash, scrap and garbage. Moves furniture, office equipment and other items which might involve the lifting of heavy or bulky articles. Maintains lavatories in clean and sanitary condition. Washes and cleans windows, light fixtures, ventilators and other items. Cleans and polishes desks, chairs, tables, cabinets and other classroom or office equipment. Participates in snow removal by shoveling, using snow blowers, spreading abrasives or chemicals, sweeping, or as otherwise directed. Maintains college grounds as needed, which could include: mowing, trash removal, and shrubbery care. May be required to work daylight shift to assist with mowing (seasonal). Washes chalkboards in classrooms and other areas. Unloads and delivers supplies if needed. Assists Security staff in security functions, such as locking doors and windows and/or responding to security issues as necessary . Other duties as assigned by the supervisor. Education, Experience, and Specialized Skills High School Diploma or GED education required . Custodial, professional cleaning, and/or maintenance experience preferred . Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Familiarity with cleaning products, procedures, and equipment in general. Worker's Compensation:

An employee in any type of position at the college is covered by worker's compensation insurance when he or she is involved in a work-related accident. Worker's compensation insurance covers medical care, rehabilitation and lost wages for employees or death benefits for the employee's dependents, according to the specific terms of the insurance policy

Tuition Waiver:

(Employees contracted for a minimum of 750 hours for the current fiscal year and who has accumulated at least 750 hours via previous service are eligible for tuition waivers for credit courses offered by ACM.)

Professional Development Opportunities:

All employees are welcome to participate in College sponsored professional development activities. Sick and Safe Leave - Part-time employees who will regularly work 12 or more hours per week will earn paid sick and safe leave. Eligible part-time employees will earn 1 hour of sick and safe leave for every 30 hours that they work. Part-time employees may accrue up to 40 hours of sick and safe leave in a fiscal year, carryover a balance of 40 hours per year; sick and safe leave hours are limited to earning and accruing up to 64 hours per year. Holidays - Part-time employees may enjoy the 17 official college holidays, however they will not be compensated for these days.

Bereavement Leave:

Eligible part-time employees are provided paid leave of up to three normally scheduled work days for the death of an immediate family member. Military - part-time employees who are in the uniformed services can take accrued annual, or leave without pay, to serve in the uniformed services. Family and Medical Leave - FMLA entitles eligible employees to take up to 12 weeks of unpaid, job-protected leave in a rolling 12-month period measured backward from the date an employee uses any FMLA leave for specified family and medical reasons. Flexible Spending Accounts - Employees can obtain a medical reimbursement account and/or a dependent care assistance account effective the first of the month following the employee's date of hire. Employees do not need to enroll in the college's medical or dental plan to be eligible for flexible spending accounts. Supplemental Retirement Accounts - All employees who normally work 20 hours or more per week can make tax-deferred supplemental retirement contributions to any of the supplemental retirement funds offered by the college.
