2nd-Shift Custodian - Birmingham Public Schools District
MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Maintain a courteous, friendly, and professional relationship with staff and district stakeholders. Cooperates with maintenance and facility staff to schedule activities and repairs. Assure that all custodial equipment is used properly, cared for stored, and maintained. If you have equipment that is not working properly it must be reported (submit a work order) Folding laundry and putting it away. If you have laundry that needs to be completed and has not been picked up you must contact Stevie. Responsible efficient and proper use of all custodial building supplies and equipment Must communicate with custodial supervisor daily. Responsible for assisting with custodial assignments as a result of normal scheduling, absenteeism, special activities, and projects. Assists with disinfecting if COVID cases are identified in buildings Complete all tasks as assigned. Outstanding customer service skills in order to work effectively with district staff and administrators. Knowledge of cleaning methods, materials, and equipment Ability to work well with the public and outside groups. Strong organizational skills and the ability to meet a deadline. The ability to work to handle a multitude of issues/ responsibilities with minimal supervision. Must be able to arrive early up to two hours for snow removal to ensure the walkways are clear before school starts. (on call) Must be able to lift up to 25lbs and push/ pull equipment Must be able to stand, walk and regularly ascend/ descend stairs for 90% of your scheduled shift. Must be able to reach above your head and below your waist.
MUST BE ABLE TO WORK OVERTIME AS REQUIRED
Birmingham Public Schools Custodians are also responsible for the following tasks: Replacing light bulbs 10' and below FSD/School dude/email Clean grease traps in the kitchen Clean clay traps in the art room Replace batteries in battery-operated dispensers Plunge toilets, urinals, and sinks Hydrate floor drains weekly Utilize pest control measures in accordance with established practices Mowing, weed whipping, leaf clean-up of courtyards Snow removal on sidewalks (within 10' of entries at High Schools) steps, ramps, and city walks. Maintain and organize outdoor sheds and equipment (tractors, snow blowers, lawnmowers, weed whips ext.) Raise and lower the American Flag daily. (Afternoon custodian takes the flag down and the day custodian puts the flag up when they open the building). Furniture assembly and adjust desks per request. Set up, break down, and clean lunchroom programs. (Tables must be washed after lunch daily and floors must be swept and run off) There must be 1 custodian in the lunch room at all times to clean up spills, pull trash and maintain the lunch room. Assist with emergency building lockdowns. Provide assistance for fire, storm, and power outages. Ability to operate Guardian and other alarm systems. All buildings must be secured nightly. This includes checking ALL doors and windows nightly. Install pencil sharpeners, classroom flags, tack board strips, etc. Moving heavy items within the building (e.g. pianos, wrestling mats, and refrigerators) Opening of buildings (disarming, walking thru, and correcting issues you see) Minor repair of student lockers and cutting locks Repairing ceiling tiles, replacing stained ceiling tiles, and re-install displaced tiles. Book and educational material distribution Receive daily deliveries and deliver parcels from various companies Minor repair of classroom maps and screens Pick-up of trash/ debris and empty trash containers on district grounds and parking lots (excluding H.S. athletic fields) Rake the wood chips under swings, slides, and other areas of the playgrounds to fill depressions, as needed. Assume all duties assigned in district kitchens Clean assigned areas.
QUALIFICATIONS
The candidate selected will possess the best combination of the following preferred qualifications: 1. High School diploma or equivalent. 2. Record of outstanding attendance, punctuality, and work ethic. 3. Ability to give and receive oral and written instructions. 4. Ability to establish and maintain a good working relationship with administrators, teachers, supervisors, 5. colleagues, and supervisors 6. Outstanding customer service skills in order to work effectively with district staff, administrators, and stakeholders. 7. Knowledge of cleaning methods, materials, and equipment. 8. Ability to work well with the public and outside groups 9. Must have attended both Asbestos Awareness and Chemical Safety in-services. 10. Ability to handle a multitude of issues/responsibilities with minimal supervision. 11. Strong organizational skills and ability to meet required deadlines. 12. Must have computer proficiency to use email, complete online training modules, and use FS Direct/SchoolDude to process work orders as needed. 13.
Physical requirements include:
Ability to work on a ladder changing ceiling tiles and light bulbs below 10'. Ability to mow and maintain courtyards at building assigned Ability to remove snow at building entrances and on walkways at the building assigned. Ability to arrive earlier than assigned shift during the winter months to ensure sidewalks are clear of snow and salted 1 hour before the start of school. Must be able to lift up to 25 lbs and push cleaning carts and other equipment. Must be able to stand, walk and regularly ascend/descend stairs for 90% of a work shift. Ability to reach above the head and below the waist.
WORK HOURS
2nd-shift, 40 hours per week, 8 hours per day, Monday-Friday. 3:00 pm -11:30 pm. Ability to work overtime as required.
