Job Description

Under the direct supervision of the Custodial Supervisor and the Terminal Maintenance Supervisor, the Custodian is responsible for cleanliness and appearance of Authority-owned buildings. Incumbent performs custodial activities in Authority-owned buildings. The following duties are normal for this classification. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned. Performs general cleaning duties in accordance with the Custodial Staff Duties list. These duties include sweeping, mopping, dusting, vacuuming, emptying trash receptacles, cleaning restrooms, waxing and polishing woodwork and stainless steel fixtures, replenishing paper dispensers, cleaning windows, cleaning carpets, cleaning furniture, etc. Handles cleaning chemicals. Assists in incidental surveillance and reports unusual activities. Other duties as assigned. While the following tasks are necessary for the work, they are not an essential part of the purpose of this classification and may also be performed by other employees. Limited maintenance activities, including painting, patching drywall, changing light bulbs, etc. Guarding secured area exit doors when airport law enforcement offices are not available to assure that passengers and public do not re-enter the area. Maintaining custodial supplies inventory and ordering new supplies as necessary. Communicating with airport tenants, users, and customers. The following training and education, or any combination of the two that provides equivalent knowledge, skills, and abilities is required for this position: High school diploma or equivalent. Knowledge of custodial supplies, equipment, and proper cleaning techniques Language Ability and Interpersonal Communication Ability to assemble, copy, record, and transcribe data and information, following a prescribed plan. Ability to compare, count, differentiate, measure and/or sort data and information. Ability to advise and interpret how to apply policies, procedures, and standards to specific situations. Ability to utilize a wide variety of descriptive data and information such as diagrams, maintenance manuals, safety training materials, time cards, and material safety data sheets. Ability to communicate effectively with airport personnel, tenants, the general public, contractors, vendors, and TSA personnel. Mathematical Ability Ability to add, subtract, multiply, divide. Judgment and Situation Reasoning Ability Ability to exercise the judgment, decisiveness and creativity required in situations involving the evaluation of information against sensory and/or judgmental criteria, as opposed to criteria which are clearly measurable. Physical Requirements The following physical requirements apply to the position: Ability to manipulate and operate cleaning tools (mops, vacuums, etc), small hand tools, snowblowers, snow shovels, motorized brooms, etc. Ability to perform strenuous activity with the ability to occasionally lift and transport 50 lbs. Ability to coordinate hands, eyes, feet, and limbs in performing skilled movements. Ability to exert required physical effort to perform moderate work typically involving some combination of stooping, kneeling, crouching, lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling. Ability to recognize and identify similarities or differences between colors, shapes, sounds, odors, and textures associated with job-related objects, materials, and tasks. Working Conditions Work is generally performed indoors in a climate-controlled environment. Work performed outdoors is infrequent, but when experienced may be in adverse conditions. The position is subject to work outside traditional hours including overnight, weekend, and holiday work.
