A Janitor or Cleaner provides cleaning and basic maintenance in buildings such as schools, offices, stores, hospitals or hotels. Cleans and polishes floors, removes trash, vacuums carpets, washes windows, cleans bathrooms, stocks building supplies such as light bulbs and paper towels and performs minor repairs as needed. Holds keys for rooms and building entrances and locks or unlocks them as needed.

Job Description

Join Cumberland County Public Library as a Custodian and play an important role in creating a clean, safe, and welcoming environment for our customers and staff. In this position, you will perform a variety of custodial, building, and grounds maintenance duties to help keep library facilities clean, attractive, and operating efficiently. Your work will directly support the Library's mission of providing valuable resources, programs, and services to the citizens of Cumberland County and surrounding communities. Cleans, dusts, and sanitizes furniture, walls, shelves, windows, mirrors, doors, and other interior surfaces Sweeps, mops, vacuums, and maintains floors, stairs, carpets, and other flooring surfaces Cleans and sanitizes restrooms, including replenishing restroom supplies and maintaining dispensers Operates, cleans, and maintains power equipment and hand tools used for custodial and general maintenance duties Vacuums and shampoos carpets and performs routine floor and carpet maintenance Collects, empties, and properly disposes of trash and recycling materials, including maintaining exterior waste receptacles Inspects and maintains building exteriors, sidewalks, stairs, and surrounding grounds by removing trash, debris, and other materials Responds promptly to emergencies, accidental spills, and other cleaning needs to help maintain a safe environment Assists with the setup and breakdown of meetings, programs, and special events at the library Performs minor building maintenance and repairs, including basic carpentry, plumbing, and electrical tasks, and monitors and requests janitorial supplies as needed Education and/or experience in housekeeping and/or custodial work that is directly related to job. Knowledge of cleaning methods, equipment, chemicals, and materials used in custodial work Knowledge of the proper handling and disposal of hazardous materials and bloodborne pathogens Knowledge of safety requirements and procedures related to cleaning solutions, chemicals, and custodial equipment Skill in safely and effectively operating and maintaining vacuum cleaners, carpet cleaners, buffers, and other custodial tools and equipment Skill in performing physical labor associated with custodial, cleaning, and general maintenance duties Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions and established procedures Ability to communicate effectively and courteously with co-workers, library staff, and the public Ability to safely operate County library vehicles ranging from mid-size cars to a ¾-ton courier truck in accordance with the County's Safe Driving Policy Ability to use basic computer skills to communicate via email and complete electronic timesheets Ability to perform minor building repairs and general maintenance tasks
Conditions of Employment:
In accordance with Session Law 2025-16, candidates selected for positions involving work with children in any capacity will be required to undergo a fingerprint-based criminal history check conducted by the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation (SBI).
