Evening Custodian Reports To:
Head Custodian /
Building Principal Position Summary:
The Custodian is responsible for maintaining a safe, clean, attractive, and functional school environment for students, staff, and visitors. This position performs routine cleaning, building and grounds maintenance, minor repairs, safety inspections, and other custodial duties necessary to support the daily operation of the school. Qualifications Demonstrated aptitude and competence to perform the responsibilities of the position. Ability to perform routine custodial, cleaning, maintenance, and groundskeeping duties. Ability to safely operate custodial equipment and perform physically demanding tasks associated with the position. Ability to follow written and verbal instructions and established safety procedures. Ability to work independently and effectively with school staff, students, and visitors. Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the School Board may find appropriate and acceptable. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Maintain school buildings and surrounding grounds in a clean, safe, orderly, and attractive condition. Sweep, vacuum, mop, dust, and clean classrooms, corridors, offices, and other assigned areas. Clean and disinfect restrooms, sanitary fixtures, drinking fountains, and other common areas. Maintain floors, walls, windows, furniture, and other surfaces in a clean and well-maintained condition. Remove trash, rubbish, and waste in accordance with applicable laws, regulations, and district procedures. Maintain sidewalks, driveways, parking areas, steps, and play areas in a safe condition, including shoveling, plowing, and/or sanding as needed. Perform routine groundskeeping duties, including grass cutting, tree trimming, and other tasks necessary to maintain safe and attractive grounds. Operate and, where applicable, monitor heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems to maintain appropriate building temperatures and promote efficient use of utilities. Perform routine preventive maintenance and servicing of building systems, equipment, motors, emergency lighting, exit lighting, fire extinguishers, and other equipment as assigned. Conduct routine inspections of building and electrical systems and promptly report safety concerns, damage, or needed major repairs to the Principal or Head Custodian. Perform minor building repairs within the scope of the employee's knowledge, training, and ability. Assist with moving furniture, equipment, and supplies as needed for school activities and events. Maintain an inventory of custodial supplies, equipment, and other materials and request replacements as needed. Maintain required logs and records, including documentation of vandalism or property damage. Ensure that exterior and interior doors, windows, security devices, and panic hardware are properly secured and functioning as required. Ensure that all required flags are properly displayed. Open and close the building as assigned and ensure that the building is appropriately secured at the end of the workday. Remain on school premises during assigned work hours and during authorized activities when attendance is required. Conduct ongoing general maintenance, upkeep, and repair of the building and grounds. Follow all applicable District policies, procedures, health and safety requirements, and local laws. Perform other related duties as assigned by the Principal or Head Custodian. Physical Requirements The position requires the ability to perform physical tasks associated with custodial work, including standing, walking, bending, stooping, reaching, lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, climbing stairs and ladders, and operating custodial and maintenance equipment. Work Environment The Custodian works in a school environment and may be exposed to cleaning chemicals, dust, noise, varying temperatures, and outdoor weather conditions. The position may require work outside of the regular school day, including evenings, weekends, or other times when the building is being used for authorized activities.
