A Janitor or Cleaner provides cleaning and basic maintenance in buildings such as schools, offices, stores, hospitals or hotels. Cleans and polishes floors, removes trash, vacuums carpets, washes windows, cleans bathrooms, stocks building supplies such as light bulbs and paper towels and performs minor repairs as needed. Holds keys for rooms and building entrances and locks or unlocks them as needed.

Duties:
Janitors perform a variety of cleaning and unskilled maintenance tasks and supervise lower-level cleaning staff responsible for the cleaning and upkeep of assigned areas in State buildings, and surrounding grounds and walkways. Collects and removes trash, recycling, compost, and hazardous or misplaced items from floors, furniture, and equipment; and disposes or places them in appropriate receptacles and locations. Prepares, mixes, and dilutes cleaning solutions following manufacturer directions. Washes floors, corridors, stairwells, walls, partitions, and windows using mops, detergents, brushes, and other cleaning devices. Vacuums, strips and waxes floors, shampoos carpets and cleans and maintains other flooring using manual or mechanical equipment. Supervises a group of lower-level cleaning staff. Assigns tasks; provides instructions and assistance; demonstrates proper cleaning procedures; reviews work in progress and upon completion; monitors time and attendance; and evaluates performance. F Qualifications:
A valid NYS Driver's license. Must be physically able to perform the tasks of the position and communicate orally and in writing to exchange information. Candidates must meet the posting qualifications required, meet the legitimate operating needs of the department or agency and have the ability to perform duties and responsibilities satisfactorily. Operational Needs- Ability to supervise up to ten cleaners. Ability to perform basic unskilled maintenance.
