A Janitor or Cleaner provides cleaning and basic maintenance in buildings such as schools, offices, stores, hospitals or hotels. Cleans and polishes floors, removes trash, vacuums carpets, washes windows, cleans bathrooms, stocks building supplies such as light bulbs and paper towels and performs minor repairs as needed. Holds keys for rooms and building entrances and locks or unlocks them as needed.
North Shore Animal League America is currently seeking an experienced Custodial Supervisor to join our team for a full-time position. The Custodial Supervisor is responsible for overseeing the daily operations of custodial services to ensure a clean, safe, sanitary, and professional environment for employees, visitors, and customers. This position supervises custodial staff, coordinates cleaning schedules, conducts quality inspections, manages supplies and equipment, and ensures compliance with organizational policies and safety regulations. The ideal candidate is a hands-on leader who can effectively manage staff, maintain high cleanliness standards, and support a positive and safe work environment.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Supervise, schedule, and coordinate the daily activities of custodial staff. Ensure assigned facilities are maintained in a clean, orderly, and sanitary condition. Conduct routine inspections and monitor quality standards to ensure consistent service delivery. Assign and prioritize work orders and special cleaning projects based on operational needs. Train new employees in cleaning procedures, equipment operation, safety protocols, and organizational standards. Monitor employee performance and provide coaching, corrective action, and performance evaluations as needed. Maintain inventory of cleaning supplies, chemicals, and equipment; submit purchase requests as necessary. Ensure proper storage, handling, and use of cleaning chemicals in accordance with OSHA and other safety regulations. Investigate and resolve facility cleanliness concerns and service requests. Coordinate floor care programs, seasonal maintenance activities, and special cleaning projects. Promote a safe work environment and ensure compliance with all applicable health and safety requirements. Prepare reports related to inspections, inventory, incidents, and departmental operations. Perform custodial duties as needed to support staffing levels and operational requirements. Perform other duties as assigned.
Requirements:
High school diploma or GED required. Three to five years of custodial, housekeeping, or facilities maintenance experience. One to two years of supervisory or team leadership experience Bilingual in English and Spanish required. Knowledge of custodial practices, cleaning methods, equipment, and materials. Understanding of workplace safety standards and chemical handling procedures. Strong organizational, communication, and problem-solving skills. The ability to prioritize multiple projects and meet deadlines. Proficiency with basic computer applications, including email and scheduling systems. Technical, vocational, or facilities management training a plus. Experience managing a diverse workforce.
Physical Requirements:
Ability to stand, walk, bend, stoop, and move throughout the workday. Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds. Ability to operate cleaning equipment, including floor machines, vacuums, and related tools. Ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
