A Janitor or Cleaner provides cleaning and basic maintenance in buildings such as schools, offices, stores, hospitals or hotels. Cleans and polishes floors, removes trash, vacuums carpets, washes windows, cleans bathrooms, stocks building supplies such as light bulbs and paper towels and performs minor repairs as needed. Holds keys for rooms and building entrances and locks or unlocks them as needed.

The work involves execution of these tasks through a well established routine. Direct supervision is received from a higher level supervisor. The incumbent does related work as required. Typical Work Activities and Cleaner Expectations Dusts chairs, tables desks and other furniture; Washes windows, walls, woodwork, toilets and sinks; Sweeps, mops, vacuums and waxes floors with various equipment designed for those purposes; Gathers and disposes of refuse; Cleans and polishes furniture; Performs a variety of routine errands and cleaning tasks; Performs a variety of related duties as required; May use a district motor vehicle as assigned. Job Qualifications Minimum Qualifications:
Graduation from High School or possession of a High School Equivalency Diploma; OR Three months of building cleaning experience; OR Successful completion of a job training or job readiness program; Schenectady County residents get first consideration for the positions.
