PERS POSITION TITLE

POSITION SUMMARY
The Custodian maintains the cleanliness, safety, and operational condition of school buildings and grounds. Performs custodial services, routine cleaning, minor maintenance tasks, and event setup to ensure a clean, safe, and functional learning and working environment for students, staff, and visitors.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Clean and maintain classrooms, hallways, restrooms, offices, gyms, cafeterias, and other district facilities. Sweep, mop, vacuum, and shampoo carpets; dust and sanitize surfaces. Refill restroom and cleaning supplies; remove and properly dispose of trash and recycling. Lock and unlock buildings and ensure facilities are secured according to district procedures. Perform minor maintenance and repairs, including replacement of light bulbs, basic door hardware adjustments, and minor plumbing issues. Inspect fire extinguishers regularly to ensure proper placement, accessibility, and operational readiness, and report deficiencies or service needs in accordance with district procedures. Identify and report facility damage, safety hazards, or major repair needs to supervisor in a timely manner. Set up, arrange, and tear down furniture and equipment for school activities, events, and meetings. Safely operate custodial equipment such as buffers, scrubbers, vacuums, and carpet extractors. Follow all safety guidelines, labeling requirements, and manufacturer instructions when using cleaning chemicals and equipment. Assist with snow and ice removal, ground maintenance, or playground and facility inspections as assigned. Work cooperatively and professionally with staff, students and the public. Serve as a mandated reporter and comply with all state laws and district policies regarding the reporting of suspected child abuse, neglect, or unsafe conditions. Attend required trainings and safety meetings Be responsible for assigned keys and ensure their proper use and security. Perform other custodial duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
Required:
High school diploma or GED. Ability to lift, carry, and move materials and equipment weighing up to 50 pounds independently. Ability to work independently, manage time effectively, and follow written and verbal instructions. Ability to pass required background check and fingerprint clearance.
Preferred:
Previous custodial, facilities, or maintenance experience Familiarity with commercial cleaning equipment and safety protocols. Flexibility to work varying shifts including emergency response situations.
WORKING CONDITIONS
Physically demanding position involving frequent lifting, bending, standing, walking, climbing ladders, and repetitive motion. Indoor and outdoor work performed in varying weather and environmental conditions. Exposure to cleaning chemicals, dust, noise, and potential bodily fluids. Evening or weekend shifts may be required.
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT
Work year, wages, hours, and benefits are governed by the applicable classified collective bargaining agreement. Continued employment is contingent upon successful background and fingerprint clearance and maintenance of required certifications.
