A Janitor or Cleaner provides cleaning and basic maintenance in buildings such as schools, offices, stores, hospitals or hotels. Cleans and polishes floors, removes trash, vacuums carpets, washes windows, cleans bathrooms, stocks building supplies such as light bulbs and paper towels and performs minor repairs as needed. Holds keys for rooms and building entrances and locks or unlocks them as needed.

Non-Exempt Saint Vincent College seeks applications for Custodian in Facilities Maintenance Office. This part-time position does not include any other benefits . Under general supervision, performs custodial and maintenance duties including dusting, mopping, finishing and buffing floors, vacuuming and shampooing carpets, and cleaning, identifying needed repairs and report in written form to supervisor, (in case of emergencies call in immediately) and restocking restrooms and showers. Must be able to work with a diverse group of dept heads such as Archabbot, Prior, faculty dept heads, students, tradesmen, outside contractors and vendors, and custodians.

No experience required, but a background in custodial work preferred.
Essential duties:
Work involves the use of custodial supplies and modern cleaning equipment and involve the moving and lifting of furniture. Work is performed in accordance with a well-established routine, to obtain the established standards of cleanliness. Washes, waxes, dusts, vacuums and polishes floors, furniture and fixtures; cleans lavatories and replaces lavatory supplies; empties trash bins and follows the recycling program established. Shovels snow, sweeps and cleans walks, and assists in keeping immediate outside premises and building entrances in a safe orderly condition. Clean and provide service to all horizontal and vertical surfaces including glass, walls, ceilings and light fixtures. Working at elevated heights is required. Secure buildings and doors when not in use. Follow instructions in regard to chemical use and safety hazards while performing daily duties. Replaces light bulbs as necessary working from a ladder if necessary; reports needed repairs to the supervisor. Moves furniture and equipment to help supplement the events, classes and meetings. Performs related work as required. Ability to learn the materials, methods, and practices used in custodial work. Ability to learn the operation and care of vacuum cleaners, scrubbing machines, polishing machines, and other janitorial equipment. Perform routine maintenance on custodial equipment. Create list of supplies necessary for assigned area. Ability to work in different areas to provide coverage for absenteeism. Ability to understand and follow simple oral and written instructions. Ability to exercise care in the use of cleaning materials for different types of building surfaces. Ability to work effectively with others. Must be able to work from a ladder to change light bulbs, clean windows and dust. Must be able to lift, pull, push objects weighing up to 50 pounds.
