Purpose Statement:
The General Custodian is responsible for creating an attractive, sanitary and safe environment for students, staff and the public; providing equipment and furniture arrangements for meetings, classroom activities and events; and minimizing property damage, loss and liability exposure; ensuring that assignments are completed in a safe, proper and timely manner and overseeing and supporting assigned part-time custodians in the performance of their assignments.
Essential Functions:
Arranges furnishings and equipment for the purpose of providing adequate preparations for meetings, classroom activities and special events. Cleans assigned school facilities (e.g. classrooms, offices, restrooms, grounds, snow removal, graffiti, etc.) for the purpose of maintaining a sanitary, safe and attractive environment. Distributes a variety of items (e.g. supplies, mail, packages, furniture, etc.) for the purpose of distributing materials to the appropriate parties. Inspects facilities for the purpose of ensuring that the site meets district standards for safety and cleanliness, and/or identifying vandalism, equipment breakage, weather damages. Maintains supplies and equipment (e.g. cleaning solutions, paper products, vacuum, mops, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring the availability of items required to properly maintain facilities. Performs maintenance and repairs (e.g. replace ballasts, outlets, locks, change light bulbs, replace washers, oil doors, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring safe and efficient use of facilities. Performs summer maintenance (e.g. strips/waxes floors, moves furniture, painting, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring that the site is ready for the coming school year. Repairs furniture and equipment (e.g. sharpening mower blades, changing oil, filters, replacing cords, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring that items are available and in safe working condition. Responds to immediate safety and/or operational concerns including after hours (e.g. facility damage, injured and ill students, alarms, etc.) for the purpose of taking appropriate action to resolve immediate safety issues and maintaining a functioning educational environment. Secures facilities ad grounds for the purpose of minimizing property damage, equipment loss and potential liability. Supports assigned site administrators (e.g. monitor students, after-hours school, community functions, reports smoking in halls, assists police, etc.) for the purpose of assisting them in their work activities. Position:
Physical presence at the worksite is an essential function of this position. The role requires in-person collaboration, direct interaction with team members, other staff, students, and/or guardians, and access to on-site equipment and resources.
Other Functions:
Assists other personnel for the purpose of supporting them in the completion of their work activities. Monitors students for the purpose of ensuring a sage and positive school environment and/or supervising student workers. Job Requirements and Minimum Qualifications ( Skills, Knowledge and Abilities): SKILLS are required to perform multiple, non-technical tasks with a need to periodically upgrade skills in order to meet changing job conditions. Specific skills required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: operating equipment used in industrial maintenance; adhering to safety practices, managing personnel; handling hazardous materials; planning and managing projects; and preparing and maintaining accurate records.
KNOWLEDGE
is required to perform basic math, including calculations using fractions, percents, and/or ratios, understand written procedures, write routine documents and speak clearly; and understand multi-step written and oral instructions. Specific knowledge required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: methods of industrial cleaning and safety practices and procedures. ABILITY is required to schedule activities, collate data; and consider a number of factors when using equipment. Flexibility is required to work with others, work with data utilizing specific, defined processes; and operate equipment using standardized methods. Ability is also required to work with a wide diversity of individuals, work with specific, job-related data; and utilize job-related equipment. Problem solving with data requires following prescribed guidelines; and problem solving with equipment is moderate. Specific abilities required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include; communicating with diverse groups; adapting to changing work priorities; meeting deadlines and schedules and working as part of a team.
Working Environment:
The usual and customary methods of performing the job's functions require the following physical demands; lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling; some climbing and balancing; frequent stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling; and significant fine finger dexterity. Generally the job requires 5% siting, 80% walking, and 15% standing. The job is performed under some temperature extremes and some hazardous conditions.
