GENERAL DEFINITION OF WORK
Under the supervision of the Principal, in collaboration with the Custodial Supervisor or Head Custodian, the Custodian is responsible for maintaining safe and clean school buildings and facilities for students, staff, and visitors.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Perform routine semi-skilled custodial work in the care and cleaning of school buildings Establish and maintain effective working relationships with site staff, parents and visitors, officials and employees Organize daily activities and maintain scheduled duties Sweep or dust mop floors daily in assigned area Vacuum carpets daily and /or shampoo carpets as needed to maintain in good condition Scrub and clean toilets including mirrors, wash basins, urinals, commodes, sinks, etc., fill tissue, towel, and soap dispensers Dust furniture, walls, window sills, baseboards, chalk trays, and other woodworks Wash walls, woodwork, blinds, etc. Clean drinking fountains Clean and polish brass or other metal fixtures Clean any area as required for accidents and illnesses, including during lunch periods Move furniture as required Spray, buff, scrub, strip, and refinish all types of floors Secure buildings Remove trash from building and place in dumpster Shovel snow, cut grass, trim shrubbery, etc. Maintain availability 24 hours a day if necessary due to emergency or snow removal operations Maintain and clean equipment and storage rooms Maintain building in a safe, clean condition and report needed repairs or any emergency/safety issue to Building Principal and Maintenance Staff Perform other duties as assigned
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
Knowledge of cleaning methods, materials, and equipment Ability to understand and follow oral and written directions Ability to get along well with others Thorough in performance of responsibilities
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
High school diploma or
